English and History and Business, oh my!

The best part of teaching is one-on-one contact with students. As a career professor, I have taught classes of just a few students, as well as those requiring stadium seating-- but the best experiences of all are those encounters with students who need extra clarification and support. My philosophy of tutoring is that most students need encouragement and confidence along with course-specific information to make them successful in their academic endeavors. The best part of tutoring? Seei... Read more

Licensed psychologist and able to help

I am a California licensed psychologist as well as a published author. I grew up in a family full of educators and quickly picked up on how to make learning fun. I believe that to truly learn material, it must be applied to everyday use and/or remembered in a fun, silly way. Throughout my graduate school career, I often taught various courses to students. I currently lecture and teach continuing education to professionals within the field of psychology and criminal justice. Regarding Eng... Read more

This is for my 11 year old son. He liked her and told me she was very helpful. She was very kind with, and I feel can and will help him with the issue we are working on.
Tom has provided immediate help to my daughter. The first lesson was very productive. He jumped right into the task and knew exactly where to begin. I also appreciate his style of instruction. He helps the student to develop the appropriate thought process and approach to thinking about the problem. He asks lots of questions to guide the thought process and has a positive, patient approach. I think the best feedback though is my daughter, after every tutoring session, has reported the tutoring session was helpful and she is learning the material. Tom is very knowledgeable and his approach is spot-on!
Sam's help was professional, accurate, and above and beyond what I expected. The goal was to point me to the right resources on a highly visible software product and get me focused on the work needed. Being new to SQL, Sam was able to orient me and relieve a lot of frustration. Also, I was in a time crunch, and Sam was able to meet me on short notice.
I hired Sean to tutor my son for a college level biology course that he was having a difficult time with and was told that due to the poor quality of teaching by the professor that he would need biweekly sessions to succeed to which I readily agreed. Sean never showed up for half of the appointments and a lot of the time never even called to cancel leaving my son sitting there with his books waiting for him. When we were finally able to reach him his excuses were family issues, his hot water heater broke, he had to take his kids to sports practices, that he had to coach his high school track team, and we once found him in Basking Ridge tutoring someone else during my son's time. He admitted that he charges extra for traveling longer distances. Everything seemed to have more importance then the commitment that he made to my son. By the time that I realized that he could not be trusted it was too late to find anyone else. During the week of his final my son set up several appointments with Sean hoping to make up the time that was missed only to have him not call or show up until my husband got in touch with him. My son was in tears knowing that he had little chance of passing the course due to the lack of continuity in tutoring. He finally showed up at 8:00 the night before the final with an attitude.
