My name is Mike. I have been interested in languages, especially grammar and etymology, for forty years. As a speaker and writer of English all my life, I am an expert on the subject. In high school as well as in college, I have completed coursework in a variety of different subjects and fields, and am passionate about tutoring in each and every one. I feel qualified to teach ESL because I have had some successful and rewarding experiences doing so in the past. When I was a Senior in college, I was a volunteer ESL assistant teacher for a Hispanic non-profit organization. Also, when I was in Honduras, I had some opportunities to teach English to native Hondurans. Some techniques for teaching English as a second language, which I found to be successful are using pictures to express a concept, giving a basic definition of a word using the target language rather than translating the word into the learner's native tongue and using flashcards. I come from a family of natural teachers. So I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a teacher. In high school I worked part time as a dance instructor. That is when I really knew what God meant for me to do with my life. What I love most about teaching is seeing my students realize their potential and the possibilities when something "clicks". In junior high school, I struggled with math. I started telling myself it was too hard and that I wasn’t smart enough to be successful in m... Read more
