Understand the big picture, as well as the little details

My job is to help the student (you or a family member)--no matter what age--become equipped with strategies to make independent study easier. I do not want to take any more of your time and money than necessary. I will first observe how the student approaches the subject (English or math) on his or her own, noting strengths and areas I can help strengthen. Then, I'll try out different methods and see what helps. I will expect a lot of repetition in this skill building so that it will ... Read more

Changing Attitudes from I can't to I can

I'm an excellent speller. In grade school my teachers would give a list of spelling words to study on an weekly basis and were given a quiz the following day. On my quizzes/tests I made all A's and my strategies were to use letters as objects/things/and names (for example, s as in Sam) or I would learn how to spell words by some type of rhythm in my head. Some of my classmates knew this skill of mine and asked me to spell words for them and even today with some of my peers and family. Read more

Tutoring to make connections in learning

As I matriculated through K-12, I often found myself struggling. It was not because I could not do the work--instead, it was because so many of my lessons were taught the same way. I loved reading and could read just about anything put before me, but, for a number of reasons, my comprehension level was not what it should be. Math came easily to me, but because of my limited reading comprehension, I did not do as well with my word problems. The more I learned and was exposed to, however, the b... Read more
