Elementary through High School Success
Greetings! After obtaining a Masters degree in International Affairs (Economic and Political Development concentration), I spent the past twenty years teaching and tutoring my own children through their elementary and high school years. As testimony to my success in this endeavor, my youngest just completed his last year of high school and was accepted at St. Olaf College along with two of his brothers attending there already. Now I would like to use my teaching skills to help others succee...

ADD/ADHD
I give ADD/ADHD children the special attention they need to stay focused on their work. This includes giving them clear expectations, the freedom to be able to move around while learning, and figuring out ways to capture their interest so that learning becomes more fun than a chore. I will also help them to organize their school work in a notebook with checklists or find some other way of giving them a clear reminder of what the expectations are. I will also devise a reward system for completing work accurately or even just for staying focused for a designated period of time. Every child is unique, and I will work with parents to figure out what works best for their child.

Nancy prepared my daughter extremely well for the ACT. She was able to obtain the higher score she needed on her ACT to qualify for a great scholarship. I had an extremely busy schedule and Nancy was accommodating. When I had questions or concerns, Nancy replied to emails immediately. Thank you, Nancy, for being so understanding and an effective tutor.

Nancy tutored two of my adopted children from April to August in math, reading, and ESL. My children went alternately every weekday for one hour during this period. My kids arrived with us in the US after being adopted in Ukraine, and, honestly, I didn't know where to turn to help them prepare for school in the fall. We adopted four children with varying degrees of education. I tried tutoring myself, and found the task overwhelming and very time-consuming. My wife and I decided to seek the help of someone more qualified to help our two children who needed it the most, our 12-year-old and our 16-year-old. The 16-year-old could speak only a few words of English and lacked simple math skills like adding and subtracting. We searched WyzAnt and other sites and decided to contact Nancy based on her qualifications and experience. We met her and, right away, we knew we had found not just a good person for the job but, perhaps, the best person we could have dreamt of to tutor our kids. Nancy immediately put the kids at ease about learning in their new world. Despite their lack of education and sometimes lack of interest, Nancy was never frustrated or demeaning with them. She approached the subjects in a variety of ways to keep the kids engaged and constantly moving forward. She also was very good at not moving too fast if more time was needed on a certain area. Using workbooks, games, and reading, Nancy was able to skillfully target our kids' needs. After each session, Nancy provided a thorough written analysis of what was covered, how the kids responded, and what their homework should include. On a few occasions, when we were not able to personally meet with Nancy, she even held lessons via Skype. She was always prepared and acted as if our kids' education was the most important thing she had to do all day, even though she also tutored other kids. Our children improved greatly in their English and math skills during this time. Our 16-year-old can now understand most of what is said to her and hold conversations in English. She can express her needs and feelings to us and she has a pretty good understanding of how English is structured. The 12-year-old loved his lessons and his homework! He moved from feeling inferior in his skills to openly displaying what he could do, especially in reading. While only a few months of tutoring cannot fully bring the kids up to an education-level equivalent to their ages, I do think the time spent with Nancy laid the foundation needed for their school teachers to build upon. They have confidence that they can learn in a new environment with a new language and that was our goal for this summer. One of the first sentences our-16-year old spoke after beginning work with Nancy was, "My teacher is very good. I like."
