Creative Math - ADHD Students

When I began tutoring a few years ago, I firmly believed that anyone could do well in mathematics, all the way through Calculus, provided you are relatively fluent in a few formulas and make time for regular problem sets. My experience over that time has only confirmed my suspicions, and its has been a great pleasure to work with many of my students. I have always found joy in getting to the point of a big concept and keeping the focus on the purposeful real-world applications that many of ...

ADD/ADHD

I have focused my tutoring practice on ADHD students for the past 3 years, and it is currently about 60% of my regular students. I myself am an academically successful ADHD student and this is a very passionate and personal area for me. I know what it is like to struggle, and I know all the series of paths that students need to take to succeed. Years ago, I began working with Sarkis Family Psychiatry who have been leaders in teaching people what it really means to be ADHD and how to be conscious of it. They have written many best selling books and many of their methods do not require medication. ADHD is no disorder at all, merely a different way of learning/thinking. If not focused on, it can definitely hold a student back, but once unlocked its a great asset. I help students build simple, consistent routines. I teach them to pace study sessions to maximize focus. I also point out just how creative and visual they are and how that is an enormous asset. This all leads to increased consistency and confidence. 80% of my ADHD students see significant improvement in school performance.

Charles helped me review everything from limits, to natural logs, to various types of differentiating equations. He combined a use of intuitive learning with detailed examples and practice problems to illustrate his point.

Our initial interviews and discussions have been excellent. He's honest, straightforward and on time. He is interested in how our son learns and he wants to help make learning easier.

We are really enjoying and impressed with the relationship Charles and our son are developing. Charles has a unique way of empowering our son to want to do his best and do it the "smart" way. Charles has given him tricks on how to study for tests and how to check his work. The tricks are practical and easy for him to understand and practice. Charles has a unique way of talking to both of our sons, in a way that is not intimidating but engaging. They want to talk to Charles about what they are studying and tell him how they are doing in school. We are really grateful that Charles is helping our son.

My 12 year old son has been working with Charles for a few months now learning how to organize his thoughts and create high quality work in writing and math. Our son enjoys working with Charles and has incorporated a lot of his suggestions into his work. His writing has improved and his math work has become more organized and easier to follow.
