Weixia
Waysha, the Mandarin Tutor
Hello (pinyin: "nin hao") ! I'm Waysha (pinyin: "Weixia"), your Mandarin tutor/trainer. My education and teaching career stretches from China, to England, and of course to America. I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Leeds University and that's where my slight British accent comes from. Since that time I have spoken Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakanese (3 out of many Chinese dialects) since I was a little girl. Many of my students' parents recognize how important i...

We hired Weixia for summer lessons so we were in and out of town a lot. She was extremely flexible and effective in getting them to remember what they'd learned. She exhibited very good communication and punctuality; she was very good with my boys who are ages 6 and 8. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

I have been trying to learn to speak Mandarin for 25+ years, and can already speak it at a basic level. I started working with Weixia about six months ago to get my speaking up to a more adult level. For several reasons including my somewhat limited group of Chinese speaking friends and the normal responsibilities of adult life, I felt that practicing on my own (watching Chinese movies at home, going to local restaurants and talking with servers I know, recording from Internet radio, etc.) wasn't working, and that I'd gotten "stuck". Well, working with Weixia has helped me get "unstuck". I'm improving. And I can see it. On trips to the Bay Area and Shenzhen in the last several months, Chinese friends who I've not seen for several years commented to me that my Chinese had improved. That was good to hear. A good part of this progress I attribute to working with Weixia. She knows how to get me to repeat saying certain things that still need mental reinforcement. And she knows how to paraphrase a complex passage I might bring in to something a little more simply worded but easier for the listener to understand and the speaker not to confuse. Weixia and I have taken a Summer break for a few months. I look forward to working with her again this Fall.
