ESL/ESOL
I received my master's degree in applied linguistics (TESOL) at University of Surrey, U.K. I have spent 11 years working in the second language training field. I worked full time as an ESL teacher and assistant professor in the Department of Foreign Language at Beijing Normal University and Luxun Academy of Fine Arts from 2005 to 2015. My job responsibility included teaching English grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. I developed a range of skills in classroom experience, lesson planning, test design, and efficient skills delivery. In my class, I always establish organization and structure, give clear and useful explanations, and focus each lesson on a few main concepts. The most important is to keep learners motivated, establish personal and real-world relevance, provide opportunities for independence and choice in learning content and process, get students to practice the target language in conversation, and correct students’ errors without stopping the momentum of the conversation. I truly believe learning a second language can be easy and fun without frustration. I always involve the learner and provide opportunities for peer interaction and discussion. I also provide opportunities for independent interpretation. I ask students questions and demonstrate an interest in their opinions. Teaching and learning are mutually improving when the teacher build a positive relationship with students by creating an engaging environment where students could develop their communicative ability without any anxiety.

Natalie is very easy to relate to. She has figured out a plan for my tutorial needs from a short conversation we shared. I continue to look forward working with her to gain confidence speaking Mandarin and expanding my vocabulary base of this language.

Natalie has been helping me get through the lessons at an accelerated rate for my upcoming business trip to China. I like how she teaches the different characters and how they relate to the words and in pictorial sort of way. She is also very accommodating to my learning speed and adjusts where needed. She engages me outside of our normal class lessons to continue my practice of the language. I enjoy learning Chinese with Natalie!

Natalie took the time to figure out exactly what I am looking to gain from Chinese tutoring and walked me step by step through her teaching process. Even though I hadn't spoken Chinese in quite some time, she was very patient and encouraging.

I met Natalie for the first time yesterday. She understood what I was looking for as a student, and quickly judged my existing ability to find the right level of difficulty. Natalie is a confident but patient teacher. She connects different concepts in Mandarin and explains them in a way that is easy to grasp.
