Ryan

Harvey Mudd/Cornell grad; multi-subject, empathetic tutor

Hi folks! My name is Ryan. I'm a full-time tutor and former physicist/astronomer with an excellent background in math, science, and English composition. I have 15 years teaching/tutoring experience with high school and college students. My primary subjects are physics, chemistry and math (from Algebra 1 to Calc II and Stats). I also consult with students on essays for college and scholarship applications. I've recently tutored students from the following schools: High Schools: Brea Ol...

linear algebra

I have a Bachelor of Science in Physics from a top-ranked engineering college and a Master of Science from a highly-ranked astrophysics program at an Ivy League institution. Furthermore, in my previous work as a research astronomer, I had to use linear algebra, both in pen-and-paper work and in computer programs (Matlab and IDL) for coursework and basic models. My coursework includes two half-semester courses in advanced linear algebra and a semester of signals engineering, with the latter heavily focused on using matrices and the rules of matrix algebra to find unique solutions and solution regions, given constraining equations.

political science

I have taken multiple political science classes at the undergraduate and graduate level, and did a concentration (what Harvey Mudd calls a minor) in the History and Philosophy of Empires. I also earned a spot at the Jean Monnet Chair EU Seminar at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, at which I was the only scientist. (The rest were public policy and economics students.) I have also published a large paper analyzing the history and structure of EU Space Policy. I keep up with developments in political science/international relations through regular reading of publications from the Council on Foreign Relations, Foreign Affairs, and the Economist.

GRE

I received a 1520 on the GRE (Verbal: 720; Math: 800) and a 890 on the GRE Physics subject test. My preparation was minimal, thanks to my familiarity with standardized testing and my fluency in both math and English. I have a great deal of experience tutoring in both subjects, and can work with students on diagnostics, targeted subject review, comprehensive review, and designing an independent program of study.

Ryan provided excellent help for my daughter who was struggling with AP Statistics. He showed tremendous patience and was very thorough. He took the time to find out where my daughter's strengths and weaknesses were and assisted her in understanding the new concepts. He provided a summary or notes after every day of tutoring and it was very helpful. I strongly recommend Ryan if you or your child is in need of tutoring.

ANNA R. from Yorba Linda, CA

This review is past due but I felt I had to write this. Ryan tutored second semester of my son's senior year for AP Physics. He was struggling and at the point of failing. Ryan is very flexible with his schedule and goes above and beyond. I wish all educators could be like him. He goes out of his way. He even had my son contact him if he had any questions after his tutoring session. He really cares about his students and their success. My son said not only did he help him in Physics, but he gave him tips that will help him through college. My son received an A on his final and has now graduated with the 2014 class, and Ryan has still kept in touch and given him useful pointers for college. He is truly a great tutor and a great person. Thanks Ryan!!!

Patricia (Patti) G. from Carlsbad, CA

Ryan has exceeded my expectations as a tutor for my daughter! He is a great communicator and keeps me apprised with all relevant details after each lesson. My daughter enjoys his style and his willingness to adjust his schedule to meet her availability. We are so happy we found Ryan!

Tori C. from Hacienda Heights, CA

Ryan was awesome! My fellow students and I had a rough first semester with our AP Biology teacher. As a result, we basically needed to be 'taught' everything, not just 'tutored.' Ryan went above and beyond with us. He showed us how to improve our note-taking skills and provided us with typed lessons and very helpful diagrams. He was very patient with me and I would definitely recommend him!

Roula S. from Orange, CA

Ryan is excellent at what he does! Ryan is the type of tutor that both parents and students are happy with. Ryan is thorough, patient, and is very easy to communicate with. Ryan always follows up his session with a written assessment. Very impressive!

Paul C. from Covina, CA

Ryan has been very professional during my son's AP Calc tutoring. He has always been quick to respond to requests. The follow up he provides after each session really helps reinforce the session. My son has benefited from the detail and understanding Ryan has of the subject. Very lucky to have Ryan as a tutor!

Dean S. from La Palma, CA

I was so impressed with Ryan's help today for my daughter, I don't know where to begin. He is AMAZING in his knowledge and patience. He truly was what she needed to get back on track for her finals this week. He COMPLETELY met all of our expectations and was gracious in our last minute attempt for help. We can't THANK YOU enough Ryan! You are now officially on our "GREAT TUTOR" list!

Cori O. from Fullerton, CA

Ryan has been an excellent tutor for my daughter. He has helped her in physics, AP Calculus, and SAT prep. She looks forward to his tutoring sessions and he is knowledgeable in many subjects. He is able to explain difficult concepts on her level. Ryan is helpful, patient, and punctual. He has been flexible with my daughter's busy schedule. I would highly recommend him.

Joseph L. from Cerritos, CA

Ryan is a very effective tutor who is patient and very knowledgeable. We had very specific request on what my son needed for his AP Statistic final, my son left the session feeling confident and prepared for his test. Ryan helped my son increase his grade dramatically. Ryan has exceeded my expectations, I would highly recommend Ryan to anyone.

Scott N. from Hacienda Heights, CA

Ryan was great at mapping out what I really needed to work on in order to set myself up for success. He did a wonderful job of relating Calculus problems to everyday situations making it easier to understand and grasp what I'm actually doing with the numbers.

Elva T. from Hacienda Heights, CA

We feel very fortunate to have come across Ryan, and his tutoring service. Ryan begins by assessing the individual student's learning style, and the student's immediate needs and challenges. Our daughter needed support with Algebra II. Ryan's approach with our daughter, and the math strategies he has practiced with her have had a positive impact on her homework and test scores. As a parent, I appreciate how responsive Ryan is to any question(s) that our daughter may have with her homework assignments. His supportive nature has given our daughter a sense of success in a subject matter that she has always felt was not her strength. Ryan truly is a 5 star tutor!

Christina K. from Diamond Bar, CA

He goes at a nice learning pace and has good teaching methods. I would definitely recommend him to other people.
