Speech-language pathologist making learning easy and fun!

As a speech-language pathologist, I have specialized in working with children birth through elementary school and their caregivers. Every person is able to learn, at different rates and in different ways. I focus on strengths and areas of interest to teach underlying skills and concepts to help students learn in all areas. Learning can be challenging, and just as importantly, it can be fun! I attend to the student as a whole person and build on my belief that we are all life-long-learners...

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with children and adolescents diagnosed as having ADD/ADHD in school settings for several years. It has been my experience that providing active learning experiences is highly beneficial to supporting these students. One of the aspects that is critical in assisting students learn is determining if their attention difficulties relate to focusing on too many things or if they are hyper focused. Often students are able to accurately self-assess when given specific guidance and are great partners in finding learning strategies that work best for them. Offering neurofeedback has also had strong positive results for children with whom I have used this method.


Aspergers

I began working with children diagnosed with Asperger's more than 2 decades ago. Most of my work with students with diagnosis has been in school settings, however, I also have experience in student homes and in community settings. One of the aspects I find most important is supporting learning for students with this diagnosis is to help them recognize how their interests can be expanded into a variety of subjects. Expanding flexibility in thinking often results in students expanding abilities both academically and socially. Understanding figures of speech and nuances of interactions can be addressed in very concrete ways to help establish a foundation upon which to build.

I began working with children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder more than 2 decades ago. Judevine Center for Autism is a nationally recognized therapeutic center where I worked for 7 years. In this job, I worked with individuals as young as 3 years old through adulthood in home, academic and community settings. My experience working with children and families continued beyond this job through my work as a speech-language pathologist. In addition to having a strong foundation in behavioral principles, I operate from a relational perspective. hard of hearing

My work with students who are deaf/hard of hearing has been primarily at Central Institute for the Deaf. I have also worked with students who were integrated into classrooms and adolescents in work settings. I acknowledge each student and family in making a decision as to whether the focus is on an oral, sign, or total communication approach. Whether part of the Deaf community, a hearing aid user, or having a CI, my emphasis is on accessing communication and having a shared language with those in the student's life. I have basic proficiency in signed English and as a speech-language pathologist, am able to assist students in understanding the critical aspects of language required to engage fully as a student who may not receive all of the information that is spoken.
