MIT Grad with "No Fear" Approach to Technical Topics

** June 2017 Update: Please note that I presently work largely with students seeking extracurricular or advanced instruction in programming, robotics, and mathematics. I work with other students on a case-by-case basis. ** It's much harder to learn something when you don't care about the topic. That's why I've always approached learning as two step process. The first step is getting to the "hmm!" moment -- that moment when you realize that the particular topic you're studying really does m...

Gil has been a terrific tutor for our son for both high school chemistry and math. He's been very reliable and our son has been very happy with Gil's all around teaching skills.

Gil met with my 14 y.o. daughter for two hours to help her learn computer coding. He was really nice and seemed knowledgeable. My daughter enjoyed the lesson and was excited about what she had learned.

Mark B. from Concord, CA

Gil is a great teacher. While he is very bright, he is also a down to earth person who is easy to talk with. He tutored me in a computer algorithms course, probably the most difficult course I have taken and was very helpful in explaining concepts that were quite difficult to grasp - going through homework problems and programming projects that I needed coaching in. If I didn't understand something he would try explaining it in another way - always with the goal that I understand the problems - rather than just learn a technique. He was also very professional in his work, took my questions very seriously, and was always prepared for our sessions so that we could go right to work. If I need help with programming or algorithms in the future, I will certainly go back to Gil for tutoring!

Mark Z. from Oakland, CA

I worked with Gil because he did a great job teaching my brother. Gil taught me Objective C to make a computer game. He's clear and he makes things fun too!

Daniel R. from Manhattan Beach, CA

Gil tutored my college son with Asperger's at the tail end of his marketing class when he was at the brink of failing. Gil patiently taught him the concepts and my son said he felt very comfortable with Gil (that's rare coming form him). My son has had multiple tutors from WyzAnt since high school. But Gil was the only one whom I felt really cared about helping my son pass. He emailed me personally giving me insight on my son and letting me know how each session went. He would email me asking what he got in his test, as if it was he who was taking the course! I can't say enough about Gil. I only wished he could tutor my son in all his subjects. We need more tutors like Gil! He's a gem!

Cindy W. from Oakland, CA

My high school student worked with Gil and found his ability to hone in on specific problem areas quickly very beneficial. This approach makes the student feel like they're not wasting their time reviewing things they've already mastered and can focus on what they really need help with. Gil's skill set allows the sessions to be very productive as he can work with my daughter with multiple subjects so she can get help in different areas depending on what is needed that week. I also appreciate that Gil is forward thinking in identifying ways my daughter can continue to improve her skills between their sessions. I would not hesitate to contact Gil and recommend him highly. He is responsive and I feel lucky to have found him.

Gil was patient, interested, and made the work interesting to my middle schooler. He was skilled at breaking complex concepts into simple "chunks" of information, and seemed to clearly grasp where to slow down and where to speed up. He was very responsive to child's needs and to parents' concerns. He is quick to respond by email and text. Definitely recommend Gil!

Xiaowen S. from Berkeley, CA

Gil teaches me logics and principles of multiple programming languages and he connects the languages through logics and usages. He teaches me how to write and understand programming codes composed with multiple programming languages that with different functionalities for each. The programs have complicated architectures but Gil was able to spot the interconnections straight away. He is a great tutor.

Jill S. from Corte Madera, CA

Gil lead me through a bunch of code he wasn't familiar with. Also helped with IDE shortcuts and tips on how to best debug code.

Catherine J. from Oakland, CA

Gil did a beautiful job helping my son with his lab report, having never met my son before or helped him with prior chemistry assignments. It was not easy as there were missing data but Gil managed to find a way to still complete the assignment. Gil was very patient and amiable and understands how to teach a high school student. Highly recommended.

Constance L. from San Francisco, CA

Gil worked with me on a project that was detailed and complicated for me. Start to finish he was excellent. He was responsive, patient, thorough knowledgeable and kind. Made what felt overwhelming doable. I'm much less stressed and ready.

Jane G. from Alameda, CA

Gil's help for my son with his Honors Pre-Calc class has made all the difference! He explains things so clearly, patiently, and thoroughly...and has also made the sessions enjoyable.

Kristin B. from Berkeley, CA

Gil is one of the kindest, most patient, people we have ever met- ever. He is thorough, caring, easy going and just an absolute wonderful tutor. We sincerely could not be more pleased. Jon is finding him very helpful and is feeling more and more confident with each lesson. He thinks he is easy to understand, starts at the beginning of a concept and successfully takes him to the end, all along the way making sure that Jon understands everything thoroughly. We are very much looking forward to working with Gil, first to pass the CHSPE exam in March and then move on to SAT tutoring if he will continue on with us.

Coding truly challenges me. As an MFA student, I am swamped with thesis work. The lack my professors have with expert, specific coding knowledge was keeping me awake at night. I was extremely stressed. Gil took my objective and leveled all the challenges to something I understood and can apply again. And not just how the code works, but why. If you are a student of coding (or know one), do yourself a favor: have Gil guide the way. You will wish you had done so long ago!!
