Richard

CLHS Educator of the Year - AP, IB, and Undergraduate Math Specialist

"Why study mathematics?" and "How will I ever understand this stuff?" are two of the most real and common questions I am asked when students, along with their parents, ask me to help. I use methods and techniques that I've perfected over the years to show the applicability and the beauty behind "the beast" known as mathematics...and my students get it. I break down and re-assemble the processes of math so that they can be easily applied to corresponding situations, especially "word" problem...

We have been very happy with Richard. Our situation is a bit unusual in that our son does not struggle with math. Rather, he absolutely loves it, grasps it easily, and is working beyond his advanced 6th grade class. Basically, he works with Richard for "fun" and has also recently begun preparing for math contests. Richard strikes a nice balance between working on a good foundation for future learning and letting him follow his interests and do the parts he finds to be purely fun. Richard truly loves what he teaches and it shows. He and our son truly "get" each other in their joint passion for math. Richard is always prompt, professional and personable. We recommend him without reservation.

Richard has proven to be an excellent math tutor. He just completed tutoring our oldest son in a college level statistics course - and brought him from lacking confidence and almost failing to very confident and getting a high "B" as his final grade. It took a lot of hard work and perseverance, and he could not have done it without Richard's patience, instruction and excellent guidance on how to study the complex materials involved in the course. Richard is also tutoring our younger son in Geometry. Only a year ago, our younger son hated math and had zero confidence in his abilities to do math well. Over the past 6 months of working with Richard, our son has completely turned around and is now doing very well and getting solid B's. He even told a friend of ours that his favorite class this year is Geometry. Wow! What makes Richard so good? Not only is he very good at math - he is very good at teaching. He seems to have an uncanny ability to adjust his style and methods to match the student's way of learning - and genuinely cares about increasing their confidence in their math abilities. He is not afraid to hold them accountable to do the work it takes to understand the material, but does so in a way that makes the student want to learn. We highly recommend Richard to anyone struggling in math.

Richard is the most engaging and enthusiastic tutor my son has ever had the opportunity to work with. Richard arrives to every lesson well prepared and armed with exceptional teaching skills and an irresistible love for the subject of math. His charismatic approach to teaching and his genuine interest in my son's success makes Richard a blessing in our household every week.

Richard is passionate about Math. He listens to his students, understands their level and then builds from that level. And it is imparted in a very inspiring fashion. Earlier my daughter was good in Math but was second guessing what she could do and was not confident. Richard changed all that - he made her looking forward to Math, passionate about Math and wanting to do more in Math. Thanks Richard for your enthusiasm, passion and simplicity. You can inspire students to take on Math - thank you.

I have been a student of Richard for a few years now, and he had always been an incredible source of help. He has always been kind and understanding, and one of the things I admire most about him is he always has a smile to share with his students. His attitude is especially encouraging to us student who are already struggling in one way or another and could really use a dose of joy in our day. It's an attitude I've been working on acquiring as well, thanks to his influence. Though for a brooding and moody teenager, it's been a little difficult. In his teachings though, he excels at showing students how to make math easier by explaining it thoroughly from understanding why you're doing what you're doing, to the actual process of working through a problem. He is remarkably patient and understanding for his students that are struggling in their subjects and will go completely out of his way to set up an appointment to help a student when they are struggling immensely. I've even broken down more than once in front of him when I was overcome with stress over a subject that I push so hard to achieve in and received only marginal results. Every time he's been extremely understanding and sympathetic and always strategically seeks to help me find a way to achieve once more in my subject of struggle. Thank you for everything Richard.

Richard is great at guiding a student through a problem as to make sure he or she has fully grasped every related topic in the scope of the question. Amazing person and teacher as well!
