French horn
I have played the French horn since 3rd grade. I love that instrument and want others to get the same enjoyment that I have. My background includes going through Oberlin College, playing in most of the formal groups there. Then I went to Detroit and while there for 7 yrs played over 100 concerts with the Detroit Symphony and in their summer series at Meadowbrook, and some gigs at the Elmwood Casino in Canada. Later I went to New York City and experienced playing Broadway shows, Radio City Music Hall, and numerous orchestras. I am now, in retirement, playing in my church band and enjoying the dynamics of that group. I love being able pass on my music experience and French horn knowledge to students just beginning this wonderful experience. Would you like me to infect you with my music passion?

study skills
I have had and developed good study skills as a tutor, but especially as a grad student getting my Ph.D. Study skills are methods to increase a student's ability to study smarter and retain information over a longer period of time. I would put it that I am experienced in correcting a students disorganization. Some of the areas are time management, organization, note taking skills, test taking strategies, establishing study habits, keeping motivation high, and removing any negative mindsets, attitudes, and beliefs. It boils down to organize and prioritize. This requires help in finding and strengthening the most effective note taking, memorization techniques, sorting papers in binders with tab dividers, keeping track of assignments with personal calendar, high lighting or color coding of readings/notes, studying before "the night before", creating and using mnemonics and flashcards, and other approaches. I am beholden to the book SOAR study skills by Susan Kruger. (See her web site at StudySkills.com) I also use some of the approaches from the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). The difficult part is to find which strategies work best for any particular student. And of course it requires constant monitoring, support, and correction to check progress for accountability. I have been tutoring for 6 years. I currently have one student working on better organization to facilitate having more free time of his own. His father is highly complimentary on the progress seen at school. I have tutored half-time for 6 years. I have discovered that I am strongly passionate about tutoring and my students. The greatest joy I get is when I hear "I get it!" after I have just explained an area in the 3rd different way.
phonics
I have spent about 3 years teaching phonics at the K-2 level. I didn't learn phonics until I was in my 40s! I remember struggling with reading in the 3rd grade. In the past I have taught phonics to students from K through 3rd grade.

prealgebra
Prealgebra is the stepping stone to the world of math, the basis of algebra 1 and following courses. It is necessary for a technical career. I understand that it is uncomfortable for many students. I'd like to make it flow as easily for you as it does for me. If your child has some holes in their math background, let me help fix them now so that they can move comfortably through prealgebra and on into algebra. In my 6 years of tutoring, I have discovered a very strong passion for tutoring and for my students. Some of the topics covered include evaluating arithmetic expressions, word problems, fractions, decimals, percents, inequalities, exponents, using variables in algebraic expressions and solving them, some geometry, and graphing lines. I have a passion for building self confidence in this pivotal math course. Don't let a math class keep you from achieving your goals.

algebra 1
Algebra 1 is the first big hurdle to a technical career. It's really the ABCs of mathematics. The introduction of variable-based math is essential. A tutor can help smooth out the bumps. But with a solid foundation in prealgebra, algebra should hopefully be like more of the same. I have used algebra in school and throughout my career. I have tutored students to help them with a smoother ride in algebra 1. Topics include: simplifying and evaluating expressions, order of operations, variables, translating from word phrases to algebraic expressions, exploring rational numbers, square roots, solving linear equations, angles of triangles, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and other topics.

Lewis is helping my sons with their English language needs. He understands their needs and then plans for the same. For example, he knows exactly how many hours of tutoring is needed for a SAT English preparation or review. Then he executes on that plan. His holistic approach on the tutoring helps the students. I see my son doing better with his test prep needs with Lewis's help/training.

Lewis has been a fantastic tutor for my son, despite his learning challenges. He is efficient, thoughtful and very thorough. He is able to filter through information in a way that his student can process it and master it. Lewis has an amazing disposition and connected beautifully with my son. He is respectful, caring and kind. I HIGHLY recommend Lewis to any student - he is a genius himself!

Lewis tutored our son for reading and writing for the SAT and did a great job. Our son found the sessions very helpful in preparing him for the test. Lewis is now preparing our son for the ACT and he is keeping him motivated and on track.

Mr. Lewis H. is a hard working person who is trying to achieve my son's goals. He gives great tutoring to help my kid to improve how to write good essays, and become efficient in readings where I can see some good end results on my son's school report. What made me impressed is that he gives very detailed reports to the parent on the WyzAnt Tutoring website, which makes me feel that my son is in very good hands.

Lewis is a great tutor he's been working really hard with me on reading skills and math. He is very nice, patient and willing to travel to help me. I am not good at math, but thanks to Lewis I've improved on my last math test. I'm also improving on my vocabulary as well. Thank you Lewis!

Lewis is currently helping my 8th grader who has some processing delays. He is extremely patient and provides encouragement along the way, which is really important. He asks for feedback and input, but since I don't really have a whole lot of insight to offer other than the fact that my son dislikes school and that I am really disappointed with how little 8 years of special education assistance has accomplished thus far, Lewis has developed and implemented his own plan where he is assessing and providing custom content for my son, which I am grateful for. He is very understanding and flexible when I have to adjust sessions at the last minute (due to family emergencies and such). He is genuinely concerned about my son and I believe him when he says he loves to tutor and would do it for free if it weren't for the fact that he has to eat!

Lewis helped my son learn how to write better essays for the SAT. He also helped him with tricks for reducing the time on each question in the math section of the SAT.

Studying for the ACT and SAT can be very overwhelming on your own with those huge books! Studying for them can be easily postponed or forgotten about as you already have so many essays, tests, and projects during your junior year. Having the appointments scheduled with Lewis kept me accountable for getting my work done. Lewis kept me right on track, motivating and guiding me through each area that I struggled with. Lewis taught me so many tricks around very difficult math problems and well as ways to tackle the reading passages. Before every meeting Lewis came prepared with a stack of worksheets for the area that I was struggling with. These worksheets had wonderful explanations and were much easier to work through than the huge practice books that I bought. The amount and variety of resources that Lewis has including his tips on essays, writing/reading drills, drills on math tricks, drills on idioms, and so much more all kept the sessions interesting and engaging. Junior year of high school is quite hectic and rather busy so I often had to cancel or reschedule my sessions on short notice. Lewis was so understanding with my crazy schedule. I cannot give enough positive feedback about Lewis. You would be LUCKY to have the pleasure of working with him.

Lewis seems to have great knowledge on how to crack the ACT and we feel confident that he will help our child secure a good score on the ACTs.
