A graduate of the prestigious USC Cinema and Music Schools, John was mentored in writing and directing by such luminaries as John Milius, Edward Dmytryk (one of the Hollywood 10), Margaret Mehring, and Bob McKee. For music, he studied under Bruce Broughton, Jerry Goldsmith, Dr. Fred Steiner, Alexander Courage, and David Raksin.
