ADD/ADHD
Over the years I've had several students in middle school and high school whose parents had them in treatment for ADD/ADHD. I've been very successful in teaching them mathematics and writing mechanics, and greatly improving their grades. It requires a teacher with great patience who's able to redirect the student's attention to their studies and to teach them in a fun and engaging manner that won't make it seem like a chore. I'd welcome the opportunity to help your ADD/ADHD student excel as well.
Aspergers
Over the years I've had several students in middle school and high school who have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I've been very successful in teaching them mathematics and writing mechanics, and greatly improving their grades. It requires a teacher with great patience who's able to discover their likes and dislikes, develop a strong rapport with them, and teach them in a fun and engaging manner that won't make the work seem like a chore. I'd welcome the opportunity to help your Asperger's Syndrome student excel.

SAT writing
I've worked with many students on improving their critical reading, writing and math scores on the SAT, and help them with any areas of weakness they might have for this exam. In the case of writing, a portion of the score comes from answering multiple choice questions about writing errors, so I use the writing guide used in Stanford University freshman English classes, which includes many online exercises in every aspect of grammar and punctuation so that the student becomes well-practiced in identifying sentence errors to maximize their score on this portion of the SAT. The rest of their writing score comes from the essay they write, so I have them write a number of essays in response to real SAT essay prompts, and after each one we discuss how to improve their essay by making their introductory thesis paragraph, the supporting facts paragraphs, and the counter-example paragraph to potential counter-arguments more effective, in addition to the final paragraph which sums everything up and needs to be very persuasive.

My son who is generally an above average student was have significant trouble in his junior year calculus class. In less than 8 weeks, with Jim's style of instruction and patient approach, he's gone from a 65% to nearly 90% and still climbing! Best of all he now "gets it" and feels as though a huge weight has been lifted off him. (from us too). He has great communication with both parents and the student and is very involved in seeing the success of his students. I would highly recommend Jim with out hesitation.

I cannot thank Jim enough or recommend him more for any of your high school/college math courses! I called on Jim for help with my M25s calculus with analytic geometry course which I was struggling with in the beginning of the semester. I failed my first test, managed a 70 (due to partial credit) on my second, and knew that I needed help because I just was not understanding the concepts. After using several $20 an hour tutors that were recommended by friends who weren't very helpful, I used this site to find the most regarded tutor. It was the most beneficial decision of my collegiate career to call Jim. Over the course of about two months, he took me from an F with no understanding of what i was doing, to a high B! I hadn't done any math in nearly 10 years, and he not only got me caught up with my class material, but also refreshed with all my algebra/precalculus/trig skills which I hadn't touched for so long. If you are returning to math after years of being away, struggling with new concepts, or are new to advanced math do yourself a favor and call Jim. All levels, all ages, Jim can help anyone. He is generous, kind, extremely polite, works around any schedule, and gets joy out of helping people understand difficult concepts. I cannot say enough positive things about him!

My daughter had Jim as a tutor for Pre-Calculus. Jim is very, very patient! And very calm and easy-going. My daughter enjoyed working with Jim. My daughter told me that Jim is very clear in his instructions and that he has great tips to help her in the tests. Very knowledgable! He went over errors made after every test so that she wouldn't make them again during the Final exam. Jim also made himself available for questions via email if she had any problems when doing her homework or studying for an exam - outside of the regular tutor sessions she had with Jim. After every tutor session, Jim had excellent summary of what they did or went over. THANK YOU, Jim! Excellent tutor -- I highly recommend him!

Jim is a wonderful tutor and possesses all the qualities a student requires from one. He is very professional, easy to reach, prompt yet friendly, and most importantly- extremely knowledgeable when it comes to Physics. As a student who happens to typically be very weak in math and especially physics, I'm the top student in my calculus based physics course in college thanks to Jim. Highly recommend!

Very patient tutor who listens to understand student problem areas and then plans accordingly to address them in a patient way.

Jim has been invaluable in my ability to successfully understand the concepts in my Calculus class. It is by far the hardest class I have ever taken and he has been able to break things down for me in a way that I can not only learn the material but I can actually remember it when it comes to the tests. I would recommend Jim to any student looking to pass a math class with flying colors! Thanks again Jim!

Jim, my daughter liked the way you taught her the Algebra2 fundamentals and she is looking forward to meet you for further classes from you.

I can't say enough about how much Jim S. helped me with my calculus. I didn't have any previous experience in calculus, but needed to complete a 15 week on-line calculus course in only 8 weeks. I didn't even have a teacher or T.A. to reference, only a textbook and Jim. He helped me learn some extremely complex concepts in a short amount of time, eventually leading to a B+ in the class. It was clear that Jim not only had a passion for calculus, but was also gifted at explaining in detail how to work the problems while still providing the big picture. I never would have been able to pass the class without Jim's help. He was pleasant to work with and very accommodating to my busy schedule. I recommend Jim to anyone who needs a patient, brilliant, and great teacher. Well worth every penny spent and more. Thanks Jim.

My son had given up with both Physics AP and Pre-Calculus. He is a busy boy, as he is in Varsity Football, AP English, AP History, etc., doing great on everything else, but just kept falling behind on Physics and Pre-Calc. I contacted Jim through this website for some "emergency tutoring" as finals are coming up. Jim has been able to work with my son and explained everything in such detail that my son has gone from "I am going to fail this class" to "I am going to make it". Jim has been very flexible with his schedule to meet our schedule, has been punctual and very respectful. I would highly recommend Jim.

Jim is coaching my daughter for SAT Math level 2 and is also helping her in geometry. He is very detail oriented, patient and answers her questions. He has also helping us by giving us a lot of information regarding college admissions and how my daughter has to orient herself if she has to get into top reputed universities. I would definitely recommend Jim for anyone who is looking for a tutor in Math.

Jim is an excellent tutor, who is very patient, knowledgeable and extremely reliable. He was always available to me whenever I needed the extra help. Because of his professionalism as a tutor, I was able to understand and do well in my Math class. He was also very helpful with some of my Astronomy assignments. Thank you Jim for sharing your knowledge and helping me to learn and excel.

Jim takes the mystery and fear out of a very logical subject. Teachers should teach pre-calculus the way Jim does. Thank you Jim!

Thankfully Jim S. sent me his profile for the tutor posting I did for my daughter in Physics. Jim has come now for 2 lessons and the light went off in my daughters head. She thoroughly understands and is very confident she can get a good grade on her next test. He clearly knows his stuff and is well if not more than worth his fees. We will continue to use him for all her needs as he is very diverse in his tutoring subject.

Jim is making great strides with my daughter in Pre Calculus. They are accomplishing quite a bit in such a short time. She is actually understanding the material!
Roberto M. from Tarzana, CA
My daughter scored a 30 in Math when she recently took the ACT cold. She now wants to score near perfect so she needs someone to teach her all four corners of every math concept she still hasn't mastered. She found one who could do that in Jim!

I found myself in a very bad spot during Calculus 2 this semester and realized that I needed to get a tutor. After searching through WyzAnt, I quickly came across Jim because of his high ratings and I decided to give him a try. Jim responds promptly and professionally, and is willing to accommodate the needs of his students. He really truly wants to help and to teach. After meeting him for the first time, we proceeded to go over some of the coursework that I was struggling with. He has an amazing ability to teach things in a way that a struggling student can understand. I was able to understand the basics of sequences and series in about 10 minutes, whereas my 2 hour lecture of the subject in class just led to absolute confusion and a lack of understanding. As I continued to learn from Jim, I really started to understand the material we were going over. He can apply any concepts to real life situations to provide context for complex things. On my first test after having several sessions with him, I literally doubled my test score. Fact is, he is kind, extremely patient, and really truly cares about his students' success. It was sheer luck and an absolute pleasure that I found him, and I will strongly consider driving all the way up from San Diego a few times a month while at UC just to get his help if I need it. Thanks, Jim.
