Maurizio is a native Italian speaker from the north of Italy (Venezia). He spoke to me in both Italian and English (more Italian of course) to help me perfect my accent and give me confidence. He spoke A LOT which was GREAT because I got to understand him and learn a couple of new words. He also introduced me to his dialect which was from Veneto. During my lesson I was introduced to another side of the Italian history and the rules of grammar. Although I was considered an advanced student, I lacked confidence and after 20 mins with Maurizio, I felt more comfortable in both my listening and speaking skills. He even brought a few printed pages he came up with and wrote out some grammar (passato remoto VS passato prossimo and imperfetto) rules for me. His level of speaking was VERY UNDERSTANDABLE and he never spoke too fast. From the first minutes to the end of our one hour lesson (even 15 minutes after that), Maurizio ALWAYS came up with a new topic and I was never bored. On the contrary, it helped me in getting to speak more. I recommend Maurizio for anyone looking to brush up on their speaking and listening skills or anyone who just wants to perfect their knowledge in Italian grammar. Grazie Maurizio. Today was my second lesson with Maurizio and it went well. He arrived on time and gave me grammar lessons, conversation vocab. and gave me a small comic book for free to better my usage of Italian vocabulary. I feel even more confident when going over grammar rules and conversations since he is patient, speaks at a perfect (understanding) level, and is willing to go out of the way until one understands it. If you are really looking for someone to talk with A LOT in Italian, try at least one lesson with Maurizio.

This review is in regard to statistics, which is the subject we worked on for my MBA stats course at UCLA. (Forgive me but I had such an amazing experience with another tutor that I can't in good conscience say Maurizio is the best--but Maurizio is every bit as much a master.) The one thing that I will say that isn't over the top positive is that you have to be sure to ask for explanations. Maurizio has such a deep understanding of statistics that he may assume you understand when you don't. This is so common that it has a name--the Curse of Knowledge Bias. All human beings suffer from this, especially the really smart ones (which is of course the population subset you want to draw your tutoring talent from—note the stats reference). I hate to do the "his greatest weakness is actually his greatest strength" thing, but Maurizio truly does handle this common problem as effectively as any professor, teacher or tutor I've worked with but you have to make sure to stop and ask him EVERY time you’re confused. He, like all good educators, is often at his best when he's answering these basic questions--which always leads to a better understanding of the complexities of the subject at hand. This is essential for those of us who are forced to take on graduate level math courses without having done much if any similar coursework at the undergraduate level. Because of my difficulty understanding stats, I would often get frustrated during tutoring sessions with Maurizio. (Let's just say I have a great passion for learning that sometimes boils over.) The one other truly amazing tutor I referred to (who will of course remain mythical for the purposes of this review) and Maurizio are the only tutors I’ve worked with who have been able to manage my frustration without getting angry at me for being frustrated and making me want to just go back to working on my own. Because Maurizio stuck with me through these difficult moments, laughing at my frustration with me rather than chastising me for being frustrated, we were able to overcome some of my most formidable learning hurdles. THE TAKEAWAY: Maurizio is ONE OF THE BEST tutors I've ever worked with—his positive attitude is unsurpassed in my experience and I think attitude is as important as subject knowledge in choosing a tutor—and Maurizio obviously has the subject knowledge part covered as well as any tutor I know of and HE’S CHEAPER THAN MOST!!!. I was literally ready to quit business school I was so upset with my inability to comprehend statistics. Because of Maurizio, I ended up with a B. If you have a math background that might sound underwhelming, but those of us with a humanities background know that, coming from that background, it's a major accomplishment to get better than a C in a graduate level math course.
