Aspergers
I earned a degree in child development several years ago, and thus took many classes in developmental disabilities. Over the years, I have had several tutoring students diagnosed with Asperger's. For example, I was hired to guide one Asperger's child through all subjects in home school, as a tutor in conjunction with the California Board of Education. He had been expelled from public school. We worked through 7th, 8th and 9th grades successfully. We used a tried and true system of time breaks and reward points, in order to get through his emotional breakdowns. He was then ready to return to public school with self-confidence. I also guided another very shy boy with Asperger's, for several years as an after-school tutor. We worked through learning to focus and get work done, despite his social drawbacks. Through study skills training, he became an honors student in high school, which made it easier for him to make friends using his improved self-image. These are just two of many examples through the years.

I received a degree in child development several years ago, which included training in ADD/ADHD education. Approximately 50% of my 29 students have learning disabilities. One example: Three years ago I was hired as a tutor for a child diagnosed with ADHD, who had gone through public and private schools for K through 2nd, and had learned almost nothing, due to his severe disability. I have worked with him now for 3 years, successfully getting him caught up. He is now functioning above grade level, making great use of his savant memory, which no one knew he had, previously. The family has asked me to stay on, throughout his entire education through high school. This is just one example of many.
