Jeanie

Academic Tutor Extraordinaire

My goal is to teach my students *how* to learn so they no longer need to rely on me. In addition to three Clear California Teaching Credentials (Math, English, and Multiple Subject), I have many years of experience as a teacher. My primary love is language, but I consider that to include math. As Mrs. B., my high school algebra teacher said, "Math is the universal language." I have experience tutoring English, geometry, algebra, AP-Euro, AP-US, AP-English, and test prep for PSAT, SAT, ACT, ...

film

I recently tutored a student who wanted help writing an essay about film. While I am a great writing tutor (with all the appropriate background education and experience), I am also a film aficionado and shot my own short film as an undergrad as part of a film class.

I hold a CA Multiple Subject teaching credential (in addition to math and English), which is specifically designed for Elementary School educators. My teaching style is engaging and I never condescend to my students. I understand how to speak to the level of the child, no matter what subject we're working on. In addition to helping students with the subject at hand, I provide skills applicable to all academic subjects.

elementary math

Elementary Math is vital for students, as it sets the foundation on which all subsequent math classes are based. When I see high school juniors doing basic arithmetic on their fingers it makes me cringe--and I blame the teachers, not the students! I work with young math students to be certain they feel confident in their math skills. It's not just that they learn the concepts, and have confidence, but I also instill a joy for math that serves them the rest of their lives.

Freda R. from Vallejo, CA

After my son's first tutoring session for the ACT exam with Jeanie, he said, "Mom, Jeanie gives me hope." He's feeling really confident that he will do well when take the exam on September 13th. THANK YOU MS. J, YOU are GREAT!

Diann B. from Pleasanton, CA

My daughter worked with three very capable WyzAnt tutors and Jeanie was by far the best! She was accommodating, extremely knowledgeable, and very easygoing in her instructional style. My daughter loved her, and brought her SAT scores up 200 points.

Ruth S. from Walnut Creek, CA

Jeanie was very quick to identify which test my son should take (ACT versus SAT) then went on to identify my son's areas of weakness. Instead of focusing on areas where he had a solid basis of knowledge, she honed straight in on areas of improvement. My son found her to be really good at giving specific information about which questions on the ACT he would be tested on, and giving him strategies to deal with those different types of questions. His confidence and motivation have increased greatly after just one session and he is looking forward to working with Jeanie this summer.

Craig C. from Lafayette, CA

Jeanie is a genius. Even after the first lesson, my son was hooked. Not sure how she does it but I'm glad she does! Thank you Jeanie.

Cristin S. from Alameda, CA

In coming to Jeanie, my daughter was in serious jeopardy of failing geometry. I felt confident that my daughter was able to learn the material but her teacher could never explain it in a way she understood. We find in Jeanie not only a different way of teaching where my daughter blossoms but she's been extremely patient and values that all children learn differently. Jeanie quickly built a rapport with my daughter and has even helped her communicate to her teacher better in class when something isn't understood. Her hourly rate is a little on the high side but it has been worth every cent. We highly recommend her for your child, especially the girls.

Vicki S. from Concord, CA

My daughter has finally found a tutor she can work with and likes. She struggles with Math so much but Jeanie seems to be very patient and understanding & it is really helping my daughter get through this. Thank you so much.

Gina M. from Martinez, CA

Jeanie has been working with my son for the last month. He is 17 and has struggled with math for the last several years until he met Jeanie. My son works hard at everything he does and has high aspirations that include being a student athlete, not many things stop him from moving forward with a good attitude, except this years Geometry class. Since he has been working with Jeanie he has gained the confidence and knowledge that he has been missing when it comes to math. Once finals are over we will be working with her to prepare for SAT/ACT, we have every confidence that Jeanie will give him the support he needs to do his very best on the exams. It is awesome to see my son feeling confident in school again. Thank you, Jeanie!!!

Susan S. from Concord, CA

Was hesitant to have my granddaughter tutor with Jeanie because the cost is high. We have been through three tutors and were ready to give up and l decided to try one last time. After two sessions with Jeanie my granddaughter begin to "get it". she is so thrilled that she now understands. Has confidence and we are looking forward to her finals this week. Thank you, Jeanie.

Adena V. from Danville, CA

Very intelligent tutor. Knows how to simplify difficult learning topics. Very pleased with time used with tutor; very organized and efficient. Tutor makes me feel at ease when learning, and is always positive and supportive. She is not afraid to try different methods of learning, yet always keeps me (gently) on task. I AM a teacher, studying for an English competency exam for CA state credentialing. Teachers are sometimes the most difficult to teach, they can be stubborn and judgmental. I might fall into that category as well. My tutor is an excellent tutor, I feel very confident with her teaching/tutoring guidance. I feel fortunate to have made contact with her for tutoring, and would highly recommend her work to others through WyzAnt! Thank you very much.

Toni B. from Antioch, CA

I hired Jeanie L. to tutor my daughter for the ACT's, my daughter had 1 week to study for the test. My daughter had already been excepted to a D-3 college as an athlete. She received a better offer at a D-2 college, however her SAT scores were too low. She had one shot left and one test date left in which she was on a standby and that was the ACT, my daughter is not so good at talking tests. Jeanie had one week to prepare my daughter and she did a terrific job, I would call Jeanie my angel, she gave my daughter the confidence and helped her prepare, and with all the hard work my daughter passed. I would recommend her to everyone. Thank you so much Jeanie.

Susan S. from Walnut Creek, CA

I hired Jeannie to tutor my daughter for the ACT. My daughters score went from 24 to 31. My daughter says that after lessons with Jeannie, she understood how to take the test and that Jeannie made it very easy to understand. Thank you so much Jeannie!!

Lynn D. from Alameda, CA

Jeanie helped us with a review of the parent and student essays and gave some excellent feedback. She also helped Wiliam with test strategy. We will be meeting with her again.

Chanel B. from Walnut Creek, CA

My son found her to be funny and easy to understand. She taught in her edits of a paper he was writing and my son felt he learned something from just one session. Looking forward to continuing relationship for ACT prep.
