USC STEM Tutor: Math, Physics, Programming, & More!

Hi there! I am a computational physicist at USC, doing research in quantum optics and solid-state physics. I teach all levels of mathematics, as well as introductory and college-level physics and various programming languages, including Fortran, Mathematica, and MATLAB. My tutoring methods are patient and adaptive to all types of students. I have tutored students of nearly every age and educational level for several years now, and I am usually available for one-on-one tutoring during the we...

linear algebra

I learned linear algebra during my junior year as an undergraduate. Having been a physics major and now a physics graduate student, linear algebra is an indispensable mathematical formalism and tool for understanding and working with quantum theory. My M.S. degree relied heavily on mathematics derived from linear algebra, as does the degree I'm currently working towards.

Fortran

In addition to a Fortran course I took and passed with flying colors during my undergraduate education, I have also written extensive programs in Fortran for my physics research, which involves automatically generating data files while running the program in a variety of development environments.

I was born in Argentina, and though I mostly grew up in Los Angeles, I learned Spanish and English at the same time. In preschool and elementary school, I was taught to read, write, and speak English exclusively. At the same time, however, I was taught to do the same for Spanish in my home, wherein I exclusively spoke Spanish with my parents while learning how to read and write. Additionally, I took an advanced course in Spanish as an undergraduate in college, and passed with flying colors.

Walter is extremely intelligent, patient, positive and effective. My son has greatly improved in pre-calculus and his grade is proof. I strongly recommend Walter as a tutor. He is also very flexible!

Alex P. from Los Angeles, CA

Walter is not only a great tutor, but a really nice, patient guy who always smiles and makes learning fun. He makes you feel less stressed about the subject matter (in my case, the GRE) and has a really deep understanding of the material and how to break it down into chunks that will be manageable. I worked mostly on math with him and he helped me refresh and relearn every math concept on the revised test. Most of them I hadn't touched in over 20 years!!! He writes lots of detailed notes and allows you to do problems yourself during the session. Some tutors like to just steamroll you by talking nonstop, but that's not the case with Walter. He will definitely watch you do some problems and either guide you through or correct it when you're finished. My scores overall went up significantly percentile-wise and I owe him a big debt in helping me get into Ross Veterinary School, where I am now. You can't go wrong with him!

GAYATRI M. from Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

There are so many wow factors!! He is a great tutor, you give any problems & he'll solve it like a piece of cake. I had to do my engineering project related to MATLAB, he helped me throughout the project with great patience & always made sure that I understood everything. I would love to learn more stuff from him in future.

Michael D. from Los Angeles, CA

Walter U. has been tutoring my son for four months in physic and pre -calculus. We could not have chosen a more qualified tutor. My wife and I are very pleased with his work and the results and would highly recommend him.

De Juan V. from Los Angeles, CA

Walter's understanding and ability to teach mathematics is truly a gift! He helped me to better understand complex mathematical concepts as well as reinforce some basic principles. He was always on time and ready to work which also made an impact and spoke volumes where his professionalism was concerned. I would refer Walter and or WyzAnt services as a result of my experience to anyone going forward.

Don W. from Los Angeles, CA

Walter has been very patient, a good listener, and intuitive on how to tackle a broad range of mathematical problems. His background is solid as a PhD candidate in Physics at USC. He is very busy, but tries to be fair to his students with his time.

Leslie B. from Santa Monica, CA

I have gotten so much more than I expected from my Mathematica tutoring sessions with Walter. He is consistently attuned to my specific needs and my skill level. He's been super responsible and thorough about following up between lessons if needed, despite his busy schedule. Thanks to Walter's responsiveness and helpful suggestions, I've made huge strides with my Mathematica project. Beyond that, his intellect and enthusiasm for learning are inspirational in themselves. What a great tutor!

Hannah N. from Valley Village, CA

I am so happy that I found Walter! Not only is he extremely intelligent, but he is truly a great tutor. He goes at the student's pace, explains everything in detail to make sure the concepts are clear and understood, always makes the time to fit to your schedule, and is extremely easy to get a hold of. He has been a tremendous help in both 12th grade high school physics and calculus, and without him, I wouldn't have been able to end the year with an A in both classes and feel confident moving forward studying these courses. I couldn't thank Walter enough!
