Marsha

Experienced Credentialed Teacher for both Children and Adults

Hi! My name is Marsha, and I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Multiple Subjects Clear Teaching Credential and a major in Child Development. I also have a Cross-cultural Language Acquisition Development Certificate which allows me to teach non-English speaking students (both adults and children). (See blog.) I got this certificate when I was teaching a modified bilingual classroom for a year. I went to a language school in Costa Rica during my off-track (vacati...

ADD/ADHD

In my 23 years of teaching, I have experiences working with elementary school age students with ADD/ADHD. I did this in my own classroom. These students had their own I.E.P.'s. Although I don't hold a Special Ed. credential, I have taken some Special Ed. classes. Some of the modifications I made in my class were: I gave students more time to complete a test or an assignment. I used the student as a time keeper when playing a game. I presented the material in a different way to the student. I let them use a squeeze toy when they were anxious. I let them stand behind their chair when they were anxious. I let them get a drink of water when they were anxious. I allowed the student to take the test, for example, by answering the questions out loud rather than using a paper and pencil. I used a "buy-in" reward system. Children are our future and opening their minds is always an exciting time. I love the challenge of grabbing the teaching moment and turning it into the "ah ha moment" when the light bulb goes on, and I see your child understand concepts where they weren't available to him/her before.

Our 10 year old son is having problems with Language Arts and Ms Marsha works with him on reading and comprehension. My son likes her and that is very important to us. She is always prompt for the lessons, flexible with meeting at our house, and easy to get a hold of to arrange lessons. Highly recommended!!

Marsha is extremely helpful and flexible. She makes the work easy to understand before moving on to the next concept. She makes index cards to study and motivates me to be a successful student. I look forward to more sessions with Marsha.

Ms. F seems to be a terrific fit for my 8 year old son. When he finished with his reading/phonics session he had a big smile on his face and could explain what he had learned. He later told me that Ms. F was 'really nice' which is important to him at this young age, but he did a lot of work! I saw confidence in him. Her credentials are impressive, we are looking forward to future success! Update: My son really enjoys working with Ms. F. I have seen an improvement in his spelling, vocab and his willingness to apply himself to reading and actually enjoy it at times.

My son age 9 was recently diagnosed ADD/ADHD so it was important for us to find a tutor with experience in dealing with kids like this as well as having the right temperament motivate him to stay on task and develop good study habits. Getting our son to his first session was like pulling teeth. He fought me every step of the way declaring emphatically that he did not want a new tutor. After his first session, I asked him how he liked Marsha and he just smiled and stated that he liked her because she's nice. .She is very patient yet firm when it comes to staying on task and completing assignments. I would highly recommend choosing her.

We have had several classes with Marsha, and I'd like to note, I've made a significant progress in English. Marsha has been a very attentive tutor, and she has always tried to adapt her classes for my needs. We have practiced dialogues, conversation, worked on vocabulary and pronunciation. I definitely recommend Marsha, as with her classes you can reach whatever goal you want to.
