My student has now had 3 lessons with Heng and I have been continually impressed after each one. She is tutoring him in ESL as well as ACT and TOFEL preparation. She continues to understand his needs and where he is academically better and better each time. She has been remarkably thorough - she had him bring all of his schoolwork (textbooks, folders, papers, notebooks), not just for English, but for all of his classes so she could understand all of his school needs and the types of assignments he was being asked to do. What has impressed me even more than that though is how she will not allow him to take the easy way out of things - particularly when it comes to his improving his English. She requires him to write longhand and goes over all of his grammar, etc. afterwards. She doesn't allow him to use a translator or computer or phone as a crutch. Instead he must use traditional dictionaries to make his connections with vocabulary. She expects him to listen and to struggle through the language at first because that's what has to happen to truly begin to understand. She knows that it can and will be hard in the beginning but that the struggle is necessary and vital. I couldn't be happier with her methods and already my husband and I are starting to see an improvement in our student's abilities. Something we hadn't seen much of at all in the first 3 months he's been with us and before he began working with Heng.

My son is currently a sixth grader in the Utah State Chinese DLI program. He's done quite well for the first five years (elementary school) in the program, but found the work and studies more difficult once he began middle school this year. As a parent who does not speak Chinese, I was experiencing difficulty trying to assist him with homework and communicating with his teacher. So...I turned to searching out a tutor for help. I found the WyzAnt tutor site and quickly zeroed in on Heng. I like her cultural and educational background as well as her many hours of experience and good reviews. She did not disappoint! I set up an appointment for us to meet her at our local library. My son connected with her right away. Heng spent about 1 hour with him, analyzing his current subject matter, homework, and skill level. Afterwards her and I debriefed for about 15 minutes. Heng provided some great insight into the teacher's expectations (cultural difference comparing scholastic expectations in China and the US) of her students and what I could do to help. She also provided a clear understanding of my boy's skill level and what he needs to do both in class and for homework. He has been doing much better in his Chinese classes ever since.
