I've recently graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Data Science, concentrating in Machine Learning, my favorite subset of applied math. I've tutored many applied math subjects over the years including computer science, physics, economics, and statistics, and it brings me joy to answer the question "when will I use this?" I believe everyone CAN understand math, but it has to be in their own way. The best part of tutoring is creating that "aha!" moment when everything just clicks....
