Learn to love learning

I'm a lifetime learning enthusiast who loves to share! My focus is on compassionate instruction; I work to build up students study skills while mastering the material in a constructive, supporting environment. My formal education consists of a BS in Mathematics and a BA in Economics. I have supplemented these informally by reading widely in Philosophy, History, Political Science, Biology, and Physics. I have a great passion for the history of ideas, which allows me to convey a subject's pla...

guitar

I have played Guitar for 14 years. I studied classical guitar performance for three years in college, and completed two years of music theory and aural skills. For two semesters I received private lessons from a PhD professor of guitar. During that time I regularly performed solo works from the classical guitar and flamenco traditions, and performed as part of a guitar ensemble. I have taught guitar and music fundamentals to a number of people through the years. I emphasize understanding how the instrument fits into the broader framework of western popular music, so my students have the skills to study any genre they like, and aren't dependent on chord/scale books and tabs.

Linux

I have used Linux regularly since 2008. My first distro was "Yellow Dog Linux" on a PPC Apple laptop. Since then I have used a number of Ubuntu variants, Gentoo, Arch, Debian, and the embedded platform OpenWRT. I have built headless servers, media centers, and even run an aquaponics garden with a modified router and cron jobs. I am comfortable with most tasks in a command line environment, and I have used most common linux desktop environments (Gnome, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, and even a bit of Unity).

Brian is so wonderful! We are working on Calculus II right now, and he is very patient with me, and will explain things over and over, in many different ways, until I understand what is going on. He understands my frustrations, and is very kind and supportive. He has made Calculus II accessible to me, and I am forever grateful. Brian really loves math, and REALLY loves teaching math, so I would recommend him to anyone that needs help. Aside from all the math stuff, he is also just a really nice, fun person to be around. Seriously, 5 stars is not enough to rate him by. He is so much better than the best.

I have had numerous lessons with Brian in economics for an MBA level course. Brian is an impressive intellectual and a polymath, with a wealth of knowledge of his subjects. But don't don't let that intimidate! Brian is also very skilled at the craft of teaching, and has the patience, persistence and sense of humor that make an excellent teacher. At our first lesson, Brian told me that he has always strived to be an educable human being. This impressed me, and turned out to be quite true, as Brian offers the essential advice of diligent thought and analysis, not only the rapid accumulation of answers and data. I must add that I was also impressed that Brian offered such excellent tutoring services at such a fair price. In San Francisco, you will find a multitude of tutors who charge double or triple the amount of Brian, with only a small fraction of his skill or affability. Fair, kind fellow, and a teacher of the highest quality! You won't regret it.

Brian is excellent! I am currently in tutoring sessions with him for MBA level quantitative analysis and statistics. He was on time, extremely well-prepared, patient and super intelligent. He was knowledgeable in the subject matter and also knew how to break down problems into a simpler format that was easy to understand. I really enjoyed learning from him and would definitely recommend him to others.

Brian did an excellent job helping me in pre calculus work! He was able to show me some very helpful ways to look at problems and solve them in ways I hadn't yet seen. Will definitely book again.

Brian was more than helpful especially within the short amount of time I asked for help. He's very flexible with his hours. His effort and sincerity to help is really evident. He was very patient and even went out of his way to do a little research to assist me with the project we worked on together. I learned a lot of new things along the way. It was a very fun learning experience! I would HIGHLY recommend having Brian as a tutor. I will definitely reach out to him again in the future if I ever need help.

We worked on an statistics assignment for a graduate statistics course I am currently taking and Brian was amazing! I learned a lot in just 2 hours, more than I have throughout my whole course! As a person who has a lot of math anxiety and is pretty terrible at math overall, Brian made the assignment less scary and even a little fun! He even had cool facts about statistics to add and has a great sense of humor! I would highly recommend him to anyone needing help with math or any other subject for that matter! :)

Awesome start. My son said that Brian takes a big-picture approach, rather than just concentrating on what's due this week.

Cache D. from San Francisco, CA

I needed help getting caught up in my math class and within an hour with Brian I had a better understanding of the material than I expected. A very good experience all together.

Heather G. from San Francisco, CA

My daughter seemed really comfortable and engaged during her tutoring lesson with Brian. She thought it was great to receive the one on one attention she needed to help boost her confidence in Mathematics. She said Brian explained the lesson in a way she can relate to and understand. At the end of the session, Brian gave me a recap of the lesson and things he went over with my daughter.

Mirkena W. from Daly City, CA

Brian was a great help to me in an difficult and hard to understand subject such as statistics. He simplified the learning process in such way that it was easy to comprehend and grasp.

Angelica B. from San Francisco, CA

Brian was so helpful! He really taught me so much and tremendously helped me out with learning the information and helping me with homework. I definitely will be using him from now on.
