study skills

Diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities in college, I learned how to compensate with study techniques and skills I discovered through years of work and study. At Columbia University, I graduated 1st (# 1 G.P.A.) in my master's degree class with a 9.99/10.0 G.P.A. I can help your student improve with study techniques and skills that work.

law

I love law. In fact, at Columbia I achieved an A+ in the advanced elective Business Law, taught by a revered Professor who is a former lawyer with the top New York City law firm Skadden Arps. Via in-person or online lessons, I can help you excel in your law class by efficiently understanding how the law works as well as memorizing the key facts without wasting time on non-essentials.

ACT Reading

SAT reading

geology

Geology can be overwhelming. There is a ton of new vocabulary and often the geologists are using terms much differently than the rest of the world uses them! I can help you focus in on the essentials and make your study time efficient. Email me for help.

GMAT

proofreading

You need someone with an eye for detail and a sense for acceptable academic and professional writing. Most proofreaders will either miss errors which will cost you or else will want to quibble about personal style. You need someone who can help you make your writing the very best it can be in an efficient time-frame. Email me and let's get started.

world history

Let me help you conquer World History by focusing on the most important elements. History is often taught as a massive data dump and this impedes learning because humans have trouble memorizing information out of context. Together, we'll create context by identifying what I like to call the "core timeline". From this timeline, it's much easier to remember specific events and grasp their significance. We'll take you from confusion to comprehension.

SAT math

literature

Literature should be a pure pleasure - a tour through the great writing of the ages. Too often it is an exercise in boredom and torture with books that make you want to claw your eyes out and teachers grading, seemingly, by opinion instead of objective merit. I can help you cut through the nonsense (f the book is a bore) or appreciate the true meaning of the masterpiece (if the books are well chosen). Email me to discuss how I can help you.

accounting

I actually love accounting. That may be hard to believe, since this subject can seem pretty boring and confusing when you are first learning it. I've excelled in Columbia University's toughest accounting courses and I know how tough and rewarding accounting can be. I can help you if you're willing to learn and do lots of practice problems, which is the ONLY way to really master accounting!

astronomy

Astronomy has been one of my favorite subjects since I was a boy. And yet, the way it is taught in school is often extremely confusing, difficult, and dry. If you want to learn astronomy in a clearer and more intuitive way, let me help!

statistics

Statistics can seem brutally difficult. The rules are often counter intuitive and after all of the time schools spend on algebra and geometry, statistics can feel like a foreign language with its own alien logic. I can help. Having studied statistics in college and again at the master's level (at Columbia University), I can help simplify statistics so you can succeed.

English

I can help you succeed in English class. Whether you are a native speaker or ESL, I can help you focus on the essentials and raise your performance. English shouldn't be rocket science but too many teachers over-complicate it - let me help you simplify English so you can succeed with more results in less time.

grammar

I can help you improve your grammar just enough to achieve your goals. If you want to understand the difference between a participle, a prepositional phrase, and a gerund, I can help you. But more likely, you want to learn ENOUGH to achieve a specific career or social goal. Whatever your goal, I'll help you with a plan to learn just what you need. For fun, here's a quiz. Is this sentence correct? "Jack and Jill sent a nice gift to Jennifer and I." What about this one? "Jack and me went to an amazing Indian restaurant in the village last night." Or this one: "John was feeling good about his performance on the test, but his girlfriend doubted it." What was wrong with each sentence and how should we correct it? Email me and I'll help you learn what you need to learn without smothering you in rules you'll never need.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is one of the most powerful and most challenging programs which almost everyone must master today. Do you need a basic tour and some help mastering the most basic commands? I can help you get up to speed efficiently. Do you need to master Excel with advanced financial models, data tables, switches, and other advanced functions? I can help you gain the skills you need in the most time-efficient and interesting fashion.

geometry

Geometry challenges students for two reasons: it asks them to visualize figures and it asks them to write proofs. For students who are not visualizers or who are more creative and less logical, proofs can be exhausting and even terrifying. I can help your student become more comfortable with geometry. I'll do this by helping him/her understand the connections between figures and numbers and helping him/her learn how to prove simple propositions. Once the student gains basic comfort with these skills, geometry becomes much less stressful. Email me to arrange an introductory lesson.

Microsoft Word

Word is essential to your performance in school or business and you need to have the key skills. On the other hand, most courses will bore you to tears with extremely lengthy "tutorials" which are long on blabber and short on critical tips and functions. I can help you quickly and efficiently get up to speed whether you just need an introduction or want to become an advanced user.

physics

Microsoft PowerPoint

Do you need PowerPoint for school or for work? Either way, I can share the skills I developed at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business to use PowerPoint's powerful features efficiently. If you take a normal course, they will melt your brain with excessive detail and way too much time on some things and way too little time on things which confuse you. I'll help you focus on the essentials, efficiently!

prealgebra

Prealgebra can seem really tough! Believe me - I know! I struggled with it myself years ago - at first it wasn't easy for me. Luckily, I stuck with it and mastered all of the tricks to make it much easier for you than it was for me. I can help you conquer prealgebra if you're willing to work hard and believe in yourself.

precalculus

reading

Whether you are learning ESL, special needs, or just want to take your reading to the next level, I can help. I scored in the 99th percentile on the verbal portion of the GMAT (admissions test for business school) and can help you read to get what you need whether it's basic skills or advanced comprehension for a college English major.

writing

Writing is a "bottleneck" skill which determines how seriously you are taken in everything else you do. I can help you tune up your writing skills or take them to the next level. Whether it is for high school, business, or college, let's work together to help you improve your writing efficiently.

vocabulary

Vocabulary is the key to so many things: ACT/SAT/GMAT/gifted testing/job interviews, you name it. What most people don't realize is (1) there are only about 500-1,000 special "critical" vocab words which make the biggest difference between a weak and strong vocabulary and (2) there are study methods which employ music and humor to make memorizing the key works MUCH easier. Let me help you EFFICIENTLY boost your vocabulary by studying the right words with methods which will make those words memorable.

Daniel L. from New Canaan, CT

When I decided to undertake the GRE exam, I knew that doing practice problems on my own was not going to prepare me for everything the test could throw at me. Truth is, I always believed that I was poor at math and better at English. During my first session with Marc, he debunked my theory. Learning math by using his methods and materials was not only remarkably effective, but, for the first time in my life, it was actually fun! The atmosphere during each session was calm and inviting, which allowed for learning and individual growth. I say this because, despite meeting with a tutor solely for GRE preparation, Marc went beyond merely teaching; he inspired me and inculcated confidence in me. Confidence that took my GRE scores up 20 points in quantitative AND verbal! (on the new 130-170 scale) When I originally saw Marc's name on WyzAnt, I was intrigued. How could he have a perfect 5 star rating? Especially considering the plethora of topics that he teaches! After being tutored by Marc 3+ times per week for 3 months, I can say without a doubt that Marc deserves those 5 stars, even more than that! He is very flexible and accommodating, so look no further! Marc is your man! Marc is one of the most intelligent and amicable individuals I have ever had the privilege of meeting. His hospitality, knowledge, and passion for his work have all left a lasting impression on me. One that I will remember as I head on to graduate school and beyond. Thank you, Marc, for everything you taught and showed me.

Harry M. from Cross River, NY

Thus far, the experience with WyzAnt and Charlie's tutor Marcus G. has been excellent. They seem to have a great rapport and Marc keeps us apprised of Charlie's progress and needs. We took advantage of your pre-pay plan once Marcus laid out a course of study. So far, so good!

Gina M. from Armonk, NY

Marcus is very knowledgeable and prepare before classes. I have both of my kids with him in Maths and Physics. My kids gain more their confidences in the subjects. My kids do not scare of Maths. Plus, he is very patient and positive. My kids enjoy learning from him. Thanks.

Sam M. from New Canaan, CT

Marc worked with our daughter on the ACT. He was consistent, easy to reach, and always had a plan of what to work on with her. It worked well for us and gave our daughter confidence and peace of mind that she was very well prepared for the test.

Janice M. from New Canaan, CT

Marcus is a brilliant tutor. His knowledge runs deep and wide. He is very dedicated to academics and helping young students achieve their academic goals. We feel very lucky to have found Marcus and highly recommend him to others!

Lakshmi N. from Westport, CT

I needed a Physics tutor who would go beyond teaching to a test or from a text book. Marcus is that person who brings to the table not only his experience and passion for the subject but also an intellectual curiosity which encourages a deeper understanding and conceptualization in the student. He has been remarkably flexible with his schedule to accommodate my son's. He went above and beyond to familiarize himself with the weekly course content so that each session was tailor made and individualized for my son. If you are looking for someone who is smart and savvy, patient and persevering, to teach your child, then you will not go wrong with Marc.

Megan S. from New Canaan, CT

Marcus's knowledge and teaching methodology has greatly aided my daughter in the pursuit of mastering Algebra 1 in middle school. Under his tutelage, she has gained a significant degree of confidence and has seen much improved testing scores in class. He is spoken about so highly in the household by my middle school daughter - now my high schooler wants to use his services. With that being said there is no greater recommendation.

Diana R. from New Canaan, CT

Our experience with Marc G. has been really great. Marc has been helping my daughter prepare for her ACT exam for the last few months. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has a great rapport with kids. I have also been pleased with the material he has covered with my daughter and feel like it will really help her prepared to take her ACT test. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in a great tutor!!

Andrew P. from Inman, SC

Marc is a very good and very patient tutor. For my intermediate algebra class he has been very helpful at reviewing the basics in a non-judgmental and patient way. I have learning disabilities and have been away from math for many years. It is very difficult for me, but Marc helps me to stay focused and on track in this class. For my business law class, Marc has been very good at helping me to understand the small but important differences in legal terms, and in explaining, in layman terms, what the textbook says. We've had great discussions that really help me to understand the legal system in the US.

Candice H. from Darien, CT

We tried other tutoring agencies before, but my son did not get much out of them. Marcus is excellent- very enthusiastic. Not only did he help my son with areas of math that were weaker, but he also increased my son's overall interest in math. My son actually enjoys going to the lessons instead of having to push him to go like I did with the other lessons. My son's feedback was that Marcus provided concrete information and tips to help him increase his grade so the lesson was more than just going over problems and getting the solution.

Doug M. from Bridgeport, CT

Marcus is a wonderful teacher. He listened to my strengths and weakness on the GMAT and focused our lesson on the areas I need to improve on. He brings a wealth of knowledge and personal experience with the GMAT so he has many helpful tricks and insights that will help improve GMAT scores. Overall, he was very helpful and after only 1 session I feel that his help and guidance will increase my scores dramatically and I plan on working with him until my test.

Raghu R. from Darien, CT

Marcus is one of the best Physics resources, though he is equally good in other areas too. The unique expertise he brings into the tutoring session is, he’s instantly ready to work with the student and jump start the session on the topic of interest. My daughter was nervous about specific areas in her AP Physics and he provided her the confidence and taught her the best way to handle problems. He engages the student in such a way, they start liking the challenging problems and resolving it. Apart from the tutoring sessions, he offers help whenever it is needed and is very much reachable to the student for any doubts and clarifications. He brings in the sophistication to the tutoring matching up the interest of the student and can guide any problems the student may come across with a remote session via his iPad. In-depth teaching with modern methods is Marcus's specialty. I would gladly recommend Marcus with confidence to anyone who feels challenged with their subject.

Eric G. from New Canaan, CT

In an effort to better prepare for the rigors of college-level writing, Marcus has been working with our son on his writing skills for several weeks with tremendous success. Marc has done an especially good job at tailoring his approach to our son's interests and learning style. Our son has responded with enthusiasm and actually looks forward to continuing these sessions into the summer.

Jeff L. from New Canaan, CT

He reviewed the commutative property of addition with me. I like the way he starts from step 1 versus trying to jump in head first. He has helped me begin to understand what I need to do over the next 2 months to prepare myself.

Ellen L. from New Canaan, CT

Five star review. Excellent first session for my son to work on SAT preparation. He came out of the 1 1/2 hour session with a very positive attitude and motivated to continue!

Connie N. from New Canaan, CT

Marcus, in a short span of time, has been able to figure out my son's learning needs. He engages with creative, caring and thoughtful curriculum. And we all think he's an especially cool, forward thinking guy!

Jack M. from Stamford, CT

Marcus is an unbelievable Math Tutor. He is so full of energy and teaches math in a way that the student really understands the material. We are very lucky to have found him, because he has helped our son tremendously! We highly recommend him!

Jonathan S. from Stamford, CT

Not only is Marc a very kind and helpful tutor, but he is very flexible, patient and talented. Marc helps students with a bottom up approach, making sure the student has a total understanding of the material by starting with the basics. Regardless if you're a student where learning comes easy or one who needs social help, Marc is your go to tutor for almost any subject. Thanks Marc!
