autism
Since I was 17 and a Teachers Aide in Benhaven School to my 50s, I have worked with people in the Spectrum. It is an ever-widening group, with many varieties of need. I worked for many years as a Respite Care Provider, taken kids with autism out into the community, exploring their interests, sharing and learning their unique needs and interests. Some students on the Spectrum need lessons on ADL skills in their own home. Most need extra fine motor and language follow through, bringing successes they have in the classroom into their homes. If you are looking for someone to develop a behavior plan that will work in your house with your family, I will work with you to help design a plan. I asked one mom I worked for what I brought to her family. Her response was that her son was happier, and that brought the whole family closer. Happy families can hang in through the stormiest times, so I consider that a great success!

ADD/ADHD
The ADD and ADHD students I have worked with do extremely well with tutoring or learning in small groups! Very verbal learners, for the most part, they can learn in while on monkey bars, on walks or while skipping stones. Usually, a high degree of what is heard is remembered. I have developed an entire system of teaching ADD/ADHD students which involves academic diagnostics, verbal math strategies such as skip counting, co-reading subjects that are highly interesting with the student, books on audio tape and computer programs. I have had students learn a years worth of material in 2 months this way, making tutoring a great investment!
study skills
I have worked with special needs children and adults for 36 years, CT certified Comprehensive Special Education Teacher since 1992. As a tutor, I have worked one-on-one with many high school students whose goals include college. Having spent many years in this field, of course, I have many adult friends with disabilities. It is a helpful part of understanding what extra compensatory strategies they will need to be independent and successful. Using e-books or books on tape while looking at a text assist some; others need a rigid structure that keeps them from going off-course. Some need absolute silence, some can study better with music on. Identifying the particular strategies that help, and getting assistance when needed, the student can maximize their efforts.
