Ryan
Former Teacher Specializing in SAT Prep
Hi everyone! My name is Ryan. I began prepping students for all sections of the SAT and assisting with the college application process in 2012. Over the last decade, I developed and refined my SAT prep program for in-person and remote students. When I took the SAT in 2017, I earned an 800 in mathematics and a 760 in reading. I also scored perfectly on the SAT's math section as an HS student in 2010. Initial sessions with SAT students are one-hour trial lessons. Payment for a trial session ...

calculus
While working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard, I tutored seven high school and college students in calculus one. I was able to help all seven of my students either maintain or raise their grades. I have no experience tutoring students in calculus two or calculus three. The highest mathematics course I have ever taken is calculus three, which is extremely similar to calculus one; it simply adds a third dimension. In my opinion, calculus two is harder than both calculus one and three. I took AP calculus in high school and scored a 3 out of 5 on the calculus BC test and a 5 out of 5 on the calculus AB test. Upon admission to The Ohio State University, I was granted four free college credits for calculus one, allowing me to take calculus two in the summer of 2012. I completed my calculus three class here at USF in the summer of 2015. I scored a B+ (one percentage point away from an A-) in calculus one, and earned two B's in calculus two and three. I don't have as much experience tutoring for calculus than I do tutoring for a subject like algebra. I started tutoring for algebra at the age of 15; I've simply had more time to tutor more students. I didn't start tutoring students in calculus until I was 18 years old. Additionally, at The Tutoring Club of Hilliard, where I gained the majority of my tutoring experience, I specialized in secondary level mathematics courses. Calculus one was considered the lowest level undergraduate mathematics course, while pre-calculus was considered the highest level secondary mathematics course. I simply did not have the opportunity to tutor too many students in calculus. All levels of calculus are difficult, but once one really begins to understand it, he or she truly begins to see math in an entirely different way.

government & politics
I tutored eight students in AP Government and Politics while working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard. Students in this class must know about the separation of powers within our government here in the United States. I also taught my students about different theories of democratic governments. For example, our government is a democratic republic, while many western European nations have social democracies. I also teach my students about different political parties, how each started, the media's effect on politics, interest groups, lobbying, and public policy and the formation of political agendas. There is a lot of information that needs to be covered in a relatively short period of time for students who are taking AP G&P. I find this subject to be extremely interesting, at least when you compare it to algebra. When I took this course during my junior year of high school, I scored a 4 out of 5 on the AP exam and was granted three free college credits. The AP exam for this class consists of two sections: multiple choice and free response. There are sixty questions in the first section and four in the second. The test is out of a total of 120 points. This means that each multiple choice question is worth a single point while each "free response" question is a total of 15 points. Scoring a five out of five on this exam is extremely difficult. In 2015, only 9.8% of the students who took the test got a 5. A score of 4 and sometimes even 3 will help students earn free college credits. In 2015, over 50% of the students who took this exam scored a 1 or a 2. They wasted both time and money. A score of 1 or 2 does not get you anything. People who take AP G&P are also likely taking several more difficult classes. Sometimes, students neglect AP G&P for other classes that they deem more important. Scoring well in this class, and more importantly, on the AP test, simply takes time, practice, and memorization.

organic chemistry
As a chemistry major, mastering organic chemistry was very important for me to do before moving onto upper level chemistry classes. I only recently started tutoring for this class; so far, I've had three organic chemistry one students and one organic chemistry two student. Organic chemistry involves a lot of memorization. It is a class that separates the men from the boys so to speak. All science majors have to take both organic chemistry one and two. Although I have limited tutoring experience for this class, I did well in both classes when I took them as a student. I took organic chemistry one at Ohio State University in 2013 earning an A, and I took organic chemistry two here at USF a semester later in 2014 earning an B+. Both organic chemistry one and two are simply about the movement of electrons. I teach my students the arrow pushing method, how to write Lewis structures as line structures, how to interpret different types of spectroscopy, etc.
physics
Just a couple of years ago, I took general physics one and two with calculus. I scored an A in the first class and a B in the second. I tend to only tutor physics on the high school level. Physics has always been my least favorite branch of science. Over the last eight years, I've tutored roughly two dozen students algebra-based high school physics. Physics may seem like a very complicated and useless subject at first, but one must know the material in order understand what is taught in upper level science courses such as physical chemistry, statics, and mechanics. Once one moves past general physics (Newtonian physics) and onto modern day physics, the topics become much more interesting. I do not have any experience tutoring for any upper level collegiate physics course and have limited experience tutoring for general physics one and two.

reading
I have sat down with approximately two dozen children to go over the alphabet, the sounds each letter makes, how to put letters together, how to sound out words, and finally, how to read sentences. I've worked with children with special needs and behavioral disorders such as ADHD, ODD, ADD, and OCD. I also have experience helping adults to further their literacy skills. Most of my adult students had learned English as their second language. Reading and comprehending English is often more difficult than learning how to speak the language. Whomever I'm working with, I first have to gain an understanding of how well he or she can read or spell. Sometimes, we have to start at the very beginning with the alphabet and the sound letters make. Other times, we can jump right into sounding out words and reading sentences. It simply depends on the student and how well he or she can read before our lessons begin. I've helped several people who were all at different stages in reading levels. Wherever we need to start, I know that I can help your child learn to read at his or her grade level and beyond. For those adults out there struggling with reading English, know that you are not alone. I can help you learn to read, increase your confidence, and show you the pleasure of a good book. Knowing how to read in English is of paramount importance if you desire a "white collar" job.

study skills
While in high school, I helped some of my peers develop better study habits and worked with them on honing their study skills. While volunteering as a peer tutor in high school, I found that many of my students did not take notes in their classes. I always teach my study skills students that it is very important to have a good set of class notes for every class. One should refer to these notes while reviewing for exams. If a student is struggling in a particular class, I encourage him or her to copy over his or her class notes two or three times after school. This tactic often leads to a better understanding and memorization of the material. I gained the majority of my study skills tutoring experience while working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard. I helped roughly a dozen adults and children develop better study habits throughout my time with this company. During my time here, I noticed that many students only devote one night of studying towards each test. It is important to start studying for a test at least a week before it takes place. When teaching study skills, I always urge my students to review their notes on a daily basis and to begin reviewing for tests sooner rather than later. Additionally, each class has a textbook and each textbook has example problems. Even if there is no homework assigned, I always tell my study skills students to still go over practice problems on his or her own time.

handwriting
When I tutor students in handwriting, I use special paper with two green lines and one red line. This paper shows students that they should always start writing an upper case letter from the top green line and a lower case letter from the middle green line. When writing a letter, one should never begin at the bottom. This is why the bottom line on is marked bright red. While working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard, I helped approximately ten children aged four to nine learn how to write their letters and words properly.

Ryan is teaching my daughter Algebra II and Geometry. He is extremely patient with her and understands how to help her without overwhelming her. I was pleased with his efforts and would definitely recommend him.
Leslie C. from Tampa, FL
Ryan has helped me progress quickly in an online summer algebra course. His laid back approach helps me feel comfortable and I really like how he's able to tell when I need assistance on a problem, or can tell that I'm just figuring it out in my head. I've had tutors in the past that weren't able to explain how to solve the equation but this isn't so with Ryan. He knows his stuff! He is extremely knowledgeable in algebra and I hope to have him throughout my freshman year of high school.
Kris H. from Valrico, FL
Ryan is cool and did a great job with my son. They were able to clear a few assignments and set up for more to come, and added a few more subjects in the long run! Woo Hoo!
