Sylvia
Patient English Language Tutor in Reading and Test Prep Skills.
I have taught in Elementary, Middle and High School. I believe in "hands-on" learning. Learning should be fun, interesting and rewarding. Students learn when a teacher is enthusiastic about a subject and knowledgeable. I work from the student's needs and build on the subject in slow, steady increments. I enjoy working with all kinds of students. I have worked in Gifted Education as well as Special Education. Every child is special. Students can have learning styles and preferences. ...

I taught Gifted and Talented students in Reno, NV and also Gifted for Department of Defense Education Activity, Fort Campbell. In both teaching situations I had students in my classroom who were diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I worked with the school psychologist, the student's other teachers and parents to adapt the learning environment in order to make them successful in my classroom. These adaptations included a quiet environment, finding their interests, providing positive social interactions and more. I believe student success is my responsibility. I make it happen regardless of the disability. My teacher education program included training in Autism.
