I was in pretty urgent need of test prep for the TestDAF, which is the German equivalent of the TOEFL. I'm very happy I decided to spend the money for a tutor, because Renate was able to research the test and print and bring test materials at a time when my access to the Internet and computers was very limited. She introduced me to the basic structure of the test and explained how it was evaluated. On my own, I would not have been able to understand the expectations of the exam. For example, I had very naive views on how to go about writing and structuring the essay for the written portion of the test. She reviewed one of my essay responses, and she demanded that I simplify. We practiced some writing together, which was very helpful. Renate also provided me with lists of transitional phrases and terminology for explaining data and trends, both of which came in very handy on the written and speaking portions of the test. As far as preparing for the speaking part, I felt that every minute spent with Renate was valuable because we spoke only in German (well, as often as possible - perhaps we should have been more strict on ourselves). She was always happy to correct me (she even printed out and edited our email correspondence to point out the mistakes that I tend to make, which I really appreciated). Additionally, she urged me to practice for the speaking part of the test by recording myself, and on her own time she reviewed and corrected my responses. What most people don’t understand when they pay for a tutor or when they talk about teachers is that there is a lot of work to be done outside the classroom; Renate was always prepared with corrections, with extra reading material, with practice sheets - we were never bored, and I am in awe of her professionalism and effort.
