ADD/ADHD
ADHD is a special challenge for students. The label may be applied to students exhibiting behavioral tendencies such as hyperactivity, lack of focus, or impulsive tendencies. This label does not mean the student cannot learn, in some cases they can learn better than other students when taught to deal with their challenge (Personal note: I have been blessed with ADHD and I am nearing completion of my PhD in Management!). I have successfully worked with ADHD students by teaching them precise steps to learning. For example, 1) This is not an excuse for bad grades. 2) Learn to apply sequential steps to understanding every subject. For example, I teach my students a specific structure to read, write, and learn math. The structure, when applied does exceptionally well with standardized test such as the FCAT. 3) Repeat the mantra of a. slow down b. focus c. details. When the mystery of learning is removed and the student finds learning is not that hard, quite frankly this changes their life.
