Insight, Understanding, and Improvement

What is my tutoring approach? •The focus is on teaching students to understand and think in an atmosphere of warmth, patience, and friendliness to free students from fears, calm anxieties, and reduce insecurities. •To effectively teach and motivate students depends on understanding them. A good way to understand them is to listen to them and to observe them. Their goals, their strengths, their constraints, and their preferences are important to learn. •The main tutoring products are insigh...

ADD/ADHD

Why Am I Qualified to Tutor Students with ADD/ADHD? I took two undergraduate courses and two graduate courses in the behavioral sciences with grades in the B to B+ range. I also took eight graduate courses in the management sciences (decision theory, information theory, communication theory, game theory, operations research) with grades in the B to mostly A range. In addition, I took 32 graduate courses in applied economics, applied mathematics, and applied statistics with grades in the B to A range. I have done state of the art research in information and decision theory and have applied it within major corporations. I understand and accept students with ADD/ADHD because I probably had/have ADD/ADHD, and so did/do many members of my family, which was somewhat undisciplined and unfocused. Despite ADD/ADHD and having been disciplined by many teachers for goofing around too much, I was able to get BS, MS, and MBA degrees and attain executive levels in major corporations. I was even asked by professors to join a doctoral program, which I did for two years but I chose not to complete the program. A few other professors later asked me to join other doctoral programs, mainly in decision theory at Stanford. Much of the focus required to accomplish these things came from my wife. She was also the one who turned down Stanford. My family, especially my mother, is very different from my wife’s family, which does not exhibit ADD/ADHD and which is more disciplined and more focused. I do not regret the somewhat lax approach used by my parents. I believe a less strict approach helps individuals retain their spirit, their childhood interests in the world, their ability to see new insights, etc. As a direct result of my mother in particular and leaders in the research laboratories, I score a couple sigma out in the creative part of the brain and functioned quite well for years as a research physicist. I left research to apply decision theory to the business side of the world and I was also known for vision in the business world. Considering all of the above, my wife and I chose to retain the spirits of our two sons. In the corporate world, I remember one of my mentors saying “focus” quite often. He was very focused and rose from Marketing Controller to VP of Finance for the Business Development Group and then to CFO and then to Vice Chairman of Xerox Corporation. I try to help students with ADD/ADHD as my wife and this mentor did. I allow some freedom to explore new ideas, but I remind them to focus and to check things. I worked quite closely with several extremely talented managers, many of whom became CEOs of major corporations. I try to combine the naturally divergent thinking styles of the ADD/ADHD student with the needed convergent thinking styles of people with outstanding management skills. I hope to create students with the spirit and vision needed for leadership and the discipline and focus needed for management.

Aspergers

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a difference, which can become a unique strength, especially in fields that require focused interest, depth, excellence, quality, and passion, e.g., research, management, the arts, information technology, etc. I received some of this unique strength from my father. He and my mother owned and managed a very large restaurant and he is my role model for outstanding quality in general (and outstanding business analysis in particular). I try to combine the depth and naturally convergent thinking styles of the AS student, who may already have excellent managerial and technical skills, with the needed breadth and divergent thinking styles of people with outstanding leadership skills. I received some of the latter skill from my mother. I hope to create students with the discipline and focus needed for excellence in research, management, the arts, the sciences, technologies, etc. and the spirit and vision needed for integrity and leadership in these fields. I use a liberal tutoring approach that helps individuals retain their spirit, their childhood interests in the world, their ability to see new insights and develop new skills, etc. I support their freedom to study their areas of interest, but I show them how to relate this information to other areas, to communicate simply and concisely, and to share their gifts with others. My tutoring approach focuses on information, decision, communication, and execution processes or functions. I provide several simple ways to improve and even automate these functions, especially in the areas of communication, which were very well received and appreciated by people in several corporations, e.g., Disney, and by people in several other countries. There are many ways I help students with Asperger syndrome (AS). For example, I assist younger AS students in learning and memorizing multiplication tables or in more deeply understanding direct and inverse variation. I have several interactive files that make this fun and reinforcing. If a student needs help in multiple digit multiplication and division, I have another file that shows the carrying operations and other steps in color-coded simplicity. Many younger students love the Minecraft survival game. I try to make mathematical survival and creativity as interesting as Minecraft. I stimulate creativity and interest through the interactive files, several math tricks revealed through algebra, simple visual demonstrations, clever insights, graphical animations, etc. For older AS students, I show them how their interests relate to other important areas. There are amazing similarities that can be seen with the help of mathematics, analogies, and concepts that have been applied to other fields. I develop their communication skills using basic communication seminar recommendations, the latest communication technologies, and communication models used in different fields. I discuss a few famous people (in their area of interest), who may provide role models of integrity and leadership for them to consider emulating. Several students developed significant insights and improvements mainly in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) areas. I only took two undergraduate courses and two graduate courses in the behavioral sciences, but I have an MBA, which was heavily based on behavioral science. I also took eight graduate management science courses in the behaviorally related theories of decision, information, communication, and games (i.e., cooperation and competition) with grades in the B to mostly A range. I did state of the art research in information, communication, and decision and applied this research within major corporations, e.g., Xerox and Disney. I am currently applying these well-developed theories and functions to education.

Michael G. from Warren, MI

Chuck is a genius at making difficult concepts understandable. I never feel like he is talking down to me. It's like we are collaborating on this project.

Sherry S. from Ewa Beach, HI

I have had the privilege of receiving tutoring lessons from Charles for a microeconomics class. He helped me to understand the principles and to work through each question I had for the class. I was confident he could help me with my tutoring needs. I would highly recommend him to anyone. As he is a good person to work with and listen to when you need a little extra help in understanding business concepts in the areas he tutors for. Thank you Charles!

Christon S. from Auburn, AL

I recently had a tutoring session with Charles for a STATA project that I was doing for an undergraduate Econometrics class. He was very helpful and patient. He did not try to "work the clock". He genuinely tried to help me not only understand what I was doing, but also help me accomplish the task at hand. I would recommend him to anyone on this site as he is really great at what he does and is a great guy as well.

Lety G. from Lake Worth, FL

He helped me prepare for my biostatistics test, which I passed with a high B! Thanks, Charles. We will definitely be in touch soon for future tutoring sessions!

Kathryn W. from Jupiter, FL

He is super intelligence, organized and an excellent teacher. He has the ability to take a very complicated subject and break it down in understandable segments. He also is willing to share his years of experience, shortcuts, etc. to make learning easier. He is the best, and I feel I was fortunate to have found him.

Karim A. from Dallas, TX

This gentleman was really helpful, and always on time. He helped me a lot. I really recommend him for everyone. FIVE STAR for sure.

Carla M. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Chuck really understands math, and has a gift for teaching. Chuck will help many students with his knowledge of math.

Drew S. from Palm Beach, FL

Charles is a brilliant and very knowledgeable mathematician, however he has such an abundance of knowledge that he will go off on a tangent to explain every possible method of solving a problem when you only have one method being taught in the classroom and only need one method. This results in a very slow problem solving process because he shows you a whole spectrum of ways that the numbers are related (the Fibonacci Sequence) and can talk for 15 to 20 mins at time. This is unfortunate because I am always under a time crunch and math is not a fast subject as is. So when I usually spend 4 to 6 hours with a fast tutor, with Charles that would take days to get through the same number of problems. Please don't let me de-value his teaching abilities he is a very knowledgeable and competent individual, he just can't machine gun through problems as most people are used to doing.

Rabab B. from Erie, PA

Now I really understood the ways of doing a Marketing Plan. Charles is a good instructor and he is here to help. I hope I get a good grade in this project. However, I am not just looking for bread I am looking to understand the way of doing the marketing plan. Thank you Charles, your lessons were really helpful.

Annette P. from Jupiter, FL

Chuck is very patient and will explain things using several different methods until the concept is understood. He is always on time & will often stay until he has gained understanding even if the hour is up.

Jorge G. from Bayamon, PR

For people who are close and far, Charles is definitely a great choice. His teaching methods are outstanding, his way of explaining the subject on hand is in-depth and precise. For people who need help in any type of math from the most basic to the most advanced, Charles is your man.

Peter B. from West Palm Beach, FL

I had my third session with Mr. M. last night. As before he did a great job of explaining an inherently complex topic in a way that made it understandable. We only scheduled for an hour, but he did not hesitate in staying longer to ensure that I had completed the task I was working on. Mr. M. comes with my highest personal recommendations.

Angelle G. from Lake Worth, FL

Very patient and kind! Really explained the material in a way I could understand. I would highly recommend this tutor to other students. He really knows his stuff.

Jenni F. from West Palm Beach, FL

Chuck's flexibility and patience (and brilliance) NEVER fails to amaze me! Thanks Chuck, I could not have made it this far along in my PhD program without your help.

Sean G. from Jupiter, FL

I was lost in multiple regression before I starting working with Chuck. Now I understand the chapters and can actually see how you would use statistics everyday!

L H. from Chattanooga, TN

Always provides information and suggestions above and beyond and is very prompt in reply. Proven to be a real lifeline.

Ann H. from Jupiter, FL

Charles is a very knowledgeable tutor. He gets a bit sidetracked and doesn't seem to understand the urgency of my time frame. I'd like someone who could come to my home and get me through this very difficult class that I probably will never have need to use.

Yohana C. from West Palm Beach, FL

Teacher Charles' knowledge is excellent and strong in many fields; so, in this sense, the tutoring with him, is very productive in many topics. In my specific case, he helped me giving me a new and different approach to Business English, and also to handle in a better way the anxieties and insecurities in business presentations, and corporate meetings. I highly recommend teacher Charles!

Maria M. from Loxahatchee, FL

My son understood and felt very comfortable with Chuck. We want to set another tutoring session. Chuck was patient and really seemed to enjoy tutoring.

Bridgid K. from West Palm Beach, FL

I have been taking my son to several schools several tutors and never have I ever found a teacher as exceptional as Charles. He taught my son not only the subject matter but how to study. I have been so disappointed with the quality of teaching in South Florida until I met Charles. Charles is the very best teacher I have found. My son also enjoyed his tutoring session with Charles and was happy that Charles took enough interest in him to teach him the way he should of been taught all along. I plan on calling on Charles again in the near future. Thanks so very much for having Charles on your reference list!!

Richard L. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Charles was extremely helpful in getting me up to speed on Word and other areas. I highly recommend his services.

Amina S. from West Palm Beach, FL

My daughter just started working with Charles and was very happy with her impression of her tutor. Looking forward to working with him in the future.

Janet M. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

This is the second year my daughter has gone to Chuck for tutoring. He is very patient and easy to understand. She always ace's the test!!

Michael O. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Charles has been a great asset to my son. He looks forward to his lessons and Charles makes the lessons enjoyable. I am very grateful for finding a tutor, who really cares about his student.

Dennis H. from West Palm Beach, FL

Chuck was very good and loves what he does. I highly recommend him! He made my son feel comfortable with math and was able to be patient with him.

Denise W. from West Palm Beach, FL

Charles was a tremendous help in a very challenging financial investment course in my MBA program. He was patient, knowledgeable and well informed in the subject area. Charles was available to help at a moments notice, in person, and by phone. His responses were timely and efficient. I was able to complete the course successfully because of his contributions. I would definitely recommend Charles to anyone needing a tutor. If I need assistance again I would not hesitate to contact Charles. He is a great asset to WyzAnt!

Glenn K. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Charles did an amazing job. For the first time my son is excited about learning, school and working with Charles again. He feels empowered! Thank you!

Nakesha P. from West Palm Beach, FL

My son says he loves the way he breaks everything down for him to understand. He said when he was teaching him one way he told him he didn't understand so he started a new method that he is comfortable with and can now begin to learn.

Major J. from West Palm Beach, FL

Mr. Charles did a wonderful job preparing my son for his test. He was patient and responsive to all my sons questions.

Dino N. from West Palm Beach, FL

Chuck impresses me time after time! To keep my daughter focused and actually learning has been an amazing quest to me and her teachers; my daughter in fact responds well to Chuck's supporting models and teaching techniques. Thanks Chuck!

Beau B. from North Palm Beach, FL

Chuck is a very smart guy and extremely nice. I am preparing for the LSAT and have about a month to go so I was looking for a tutor that could get me over the hump for the last month of studying. Chuck seemed truly concerned with trying to find techniques to help better my LSAT score. If I had more time to work with him he could probably be some help. Because of how much I like the guy I don't like saying this but I would not recommend him for preparing for the LSAT. He didn't seem too familiar with the test, but I think if we had more time to prepare he would be great to help mentor me through the process.

I. Elaine L. from Lake Worth, FL

The session was very fruitful. I am positive and confident that I have made the right decision in terms of selecting Charles as my tutor.

Kaitlyn E. from West Palm Beach, FL

Charles was a great tutor! He is very patient and breaks down everything to make it very simple to understand.

Catherine G. from Jupiter, FL

Mr Charles M,is wonderful and very attentive to the student as well as understanding what my son's goal was. It was an easy conversation and he did a fantastic job explaining different real life applications that the Math can help you use in programming. Because I was there the topic deviated, and over (childs) head, but I was very happy with all the information that was presented and learned and how well they understood each other quickly. At this time my son needs a greater understanding of what he is looking for and how much work and dedication it will take to obtain is goal. Mr. Charles helped that understanding along.

John L. from Jupiter, FL

Chuck is a very competent and patient tutor. Chuck is able to assist students at all levels from doctoral degree candidates to elementary school children. He helped me prepare for my doctoral dissertation defense and reviewed my final research paper, as well as helped my son prepare for the Florida FCAT. I highly recommend Chuck!

Abi A. from Jupiter, FL

As soon as my first session began, Charles began quizzing me on some basic math skills, and he had me figure it out without a calculator. Many of these skills I unknowingly lacked, and he showed me how to figure them out. He taught in a simple, concise format, and he was able to make things that had previously been hard to understand very simple. He was also very easy to talk to; he was very outgoing and intellectual. I look forward to working with him in the future.

Matt B. from West Palm Beach, FL

He made concepts that I was having trouble with simple and explained everything very clearly. The amount of good information I learned in a short amount of time was beneficial to my learning.

Claudia S. from West Palm Beach, FL

He taught me basic math in Geometry and Trig. He also explained graphs and how to find the width and length of a tri.

Erik N. from West Palm Beach, FL

He knows everything about Accounting and will go through it with you slowly. Highly recommend, and will continue utilizing his services.

Dennise P. from Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Charles is very patient when tutoring my son for math, he also cover a little bit of other subjects. He has a gift for mathematics, he is a very nice person.

Lauren I. from Woodbridge, CT

SAT TUTORING. HE HELPED ME A LOT. He only stops the lesson when he is done, not when the time is up.

Nikki S. from Jupiter, FL

He was very calm and very patient with me. I think he's a great tutor and very helpful. I will definitely be going to see him again.

Louis R. from West Palm Beach, FL

I enjoyed the session with Chuck. I learned some things from an accountant's side of business. I received helpful information on how to run my company.

Lisa J. from West Palm Beach, FL

Charles spent quite a lot of time and effort working with my son on extremely high level math (Differential Equations) and Physics (AP Physics C: E&M). He prepared extensively for their meetings and helped my son understand some difficult concepts. I highly recommend Charles for his knowledge, effort, and integrity. We would certainly use him again!

Helena C. from West Palm Beach, FL

Mr. Chuck, in addition to the subject matter, understands us as humans and helps my sons and me to achieve our academic goals and grow in other aspects of life.

Artem D. from Lake Worth, FL

Thank You: We focused on pollution. Topics included point and non-point (i.e., diffuse) sources of pollution, the geometry of a point source (i.e., area affected increases dramatically and concentration decreases dramatically as the distance from the source increases), the life and decay rate of some types of pollution, biotic index, soap and phosphates, eutrophication, sources of pollution, types of pollution, causes of pollution, effects of pollution, a few communication tips (for essay questions), types of monitoring, direct monitoring of air and water, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), biotic indexes, the pollution management process (goal, measurement, gap, root cause analysis, improvement action plan), release and transfer, the importance of innovation, etc.

Adam K. from Lake Worth, FL

Chuck helped me with solidifying my understanding of sets theory set notation, power sets, subsets, and mathematical induction. He used a number of tools, websites, and books to explain his logic, and was great to work with.

Surphia L. from Saint Charles, IL

Charles is the best. He was patient in explaining. And he worked with me to the end. Thank you so much!

Rumpa C. from Nashville, TN

He helped my son with chess and was very patient and very knowledgeable. He gave extra time because we lost about half an hour setting up the system. At the end of the session he also sent study materials!I would highly recommend him as a tutor and avail his services again

Hongyu W. from Sylacauga, AL

Charles is very knowledgeable, able to explain clearly links between subjects. He is a kind-hearted tutor, too, as he can help students according to their own situations.

Kim C. from West Palm Beach, FL

From a teenager, that's high praise! My son enjoys studying with him. Meeting at the Gardens library is so convenient for us - and Chuck is very accommodating in the schedule.

Lybron G. from West Palm Beach, FL

My son's first session went great! Charles can break complicated subjects like Algebra down to its simplest form. Looking forward to continued sessions with him
