Experienced, certified, History, English and Study Skills Tutor

I taught in New Jersey and Pennsylvania public and private schools for over 20 years, and have been tutoring one-on-one for over thirty years, starting, at a teacher's request, in high school. I attended Connecticut College, received my undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Douglass College, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. My M.Ed. is from Rutgers Graduate School of Education. I began tutoring in Spanish, then French, then English and Social Studies (History). Over the years I...

Aspergers

Over the years, as a certified teacher in public school, and in alternative and private religious schools I have taught a number of students who were diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome. Their symptoms ranged from an inability to make social contact, including eye contact, to a lack of understanding of colloquial speech. This, of course, not only makes their interaction with other students difficult, but also makes some of them unable to understand idioms and other word usages that are commonly used, resulting in confusion, frustration, and a poor academic showing. My tutoring has been significant, since it is on a one-to-one basis that greater academic, and even social progress can be made.

ADD/ADHD

I have been working with ADD/ADHD students for the last 20 years in French, Spanish, History, and especially writing, including essays, and research papers. I have trained teachers, both individually and in workshops, in methods to help students with attention deficit issues which impact not only the ability to learn, but also affect social issues, such as behavior and self-esteem. I have, as well, mentored students with ADD/ADHD, including my own children, and began a parents' support group because there was little help from the local schools. As a public school teacher, I worked with many at-risk students whose primary diagnosis was ADD/ADHD. In one of the schools in which I taught I wrote the students' IEP's and held meetings with parents, guidance counselors, and students, in which above all, I advocated for the students.

I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate everything you've done to help my daughter to improve her French. You've helped build the foundation for improved academic achievement, focus. The impact of your help is so significant. I truly can't thank you enough.
