I believe that the best way to learn a skill is to actually use it. You can learn the theory behind the skill, but unless you use it, you won't be fluent in it. To that end, I encourage students to continue their practice on their own, and to use their lesson as a chance to get feedback on their practice and advice on what to work on next.
