Wendy

Former Elementary Teacher

Hello there! My name is Wendy. I'm a 43 year old former teacher. I graduated from Southern CT State University with a BA in Elementary Education, and a BS in Sociology. I substitute taught in a variety of classrooms with age groups from Pre-K to 6th as well as special needs classes, before deciding what I wanted to teach. I was certified in Connecticut where I taught second grade, before moving to Texas where I got certified again and taught both kindergarten and first grade. A while ...

Wendy has excellent teaching skills. My son has improved his grade's in math and reading. I highly recommend her and look forward having her work with my son in the future.

My son has been working with Wendy for about six months now, and we are beyond pleased with his progress and confidence in school. Wendy is extremely patient, and as my son has said she makes work "challenging" but fun at the same time. Wendy is always approachable and easy to talk with, offering her advice and ideas while truly listening to our thoughts and concerns. My son enjoys working with Wendy on a weekly basis. We have truly been impressed by her love for teaching, the overall concern and interest she has in my son, and energy she brings to all of her lessons!

Wendy asked all the right questions in advance of meeting my granddaughter and was prompt and well prepared when she arrived to tutor her in reading and writing. She had a good rapport with my grand child and I felt after the first session that they could develop a good working relationship. I highly recommend Wendy as a tutor!

Wendy is an excellent tutor, she's very dedicated to my daughter. With just four sessions We are seeing significant improvement in her grades and she feels more confident. Wendy is doing a great job and I'm very happy to see my daughter improving in math.

I am very impressed with the feedback I received from Wendy. I am not present at my son's tutoring sessions so I rely on the feedback form to let me know what they covered. I was impressed with the variety of material Wendy was able to cover in the hour and the feedback form she developed to put in his backpack. The feedback she provided via Wysant further detailed the lesson. Her communication skills are excellent in terms of keeping me informed and providing detailed info. Additionally since his first lesson with Wendy I have already seen my son's attitude about reading change for the better. He is taking more joy in reading and more pride in his ability. This is a great relief given that motivation is such a key factor in success and is much more difficult, in my opinion, to improve. You can teach skill based lessons but a tutor who can improve motivation has a rare gift. Particularly since my son had convinced his classroom teacher that his skill level was much lower than it actually is due to a desire to avoid learning to read. Now he is starting to desire to be a good reader. I can't express what a change this is from prior to starting with Wendy. I look forward to continuing to see such improvement.

Wendy is a tutor that certainly goes above and beyond the call of duty. She brought my fears comfort when she began working with my son, as he has excelled since. This was my first time using Wyzant and it was a perfect match. I don't think there could have been a more better match for my son. He calls her his secret weapon. I highly recommend Wendy and we are truly grateful for meeting her. Thanks so much.

I could not have dreamed up a more perfect tutor for my 10 yr old son. She has just the right balance of focus and fun to keep him interested and laughing. Besides her advanced teaching skills, she also has the patience, understanding and sense of humor needed to work with special needs children. One of her greatest strengths is her capability to quickly pinpoint the exact areas a child needs help with the most and develop an individual teaching plan that incorporates all those areas into each lesson. She leaves very detailed notes after each lesson on what she covered. I’m always impressed by how detailed and organized she is. As a full time working mom, another huge plus is that she is extremely flexible. For example, if my son needs extra help for a spelling test she will incorporate that into her lesson that week. One of his problem areas is with writing prompts. He is expected to write several paragraphs on a given topic with a beginning, middle and conclusion with added details. This has been very difficult for him. She had us go to the library and get books out on a topic of interest to him. They did research on the Internet. She used a story web to help him organize topic ideas and thoughts on paper before he typed the report in Word which turned out great. I went to my parent-teacher conference last week and his classroom and special ed teacher were amazed at a recent writing prompt he did at school. They said it was the best he had ever done. I knew it was because of Wendy. We could not be more happy that she is in our lives.

Wendy, it was a pleasure to meet you on Tuesday Sept. 4, 2012. Even though this was my grandson first lesson he really enjoyed your teaching ability and he felt very comfortable with you. You have great patience and I can see you really enjoyed teaching. I have been through several tutors because of my other two grand kids and I must say you are the best I have met. My grandson asked me can you tutor him 30 days a month after school that is how much he enjoyed you teaching him. He was so proud of the sentence he did. We all look forward to seeing you next week.

I initially just wanted a tutor to come in and help my incoming 3rd grader, who scoffs at anything difficult to her, catch up with her math and maybe get a head start on the year. In the month or so since Wendy has come, I have noticed a definite improvement in my child's math skills. She has learned to slow down, take her time, and really think about why she is doing what she is doing. Wendy was able to teach her what I couldn't - the reason behind the skills. I would recommend her to anyone, especially to children who need extra individualized attention in order to succeed.

Wendy is an amazing tutor. I can't begin to express what a positive influence she has on my six year old son and his reading skills. Wendy started working with my son a little over a month ago and in such a short time I have seen such a big difference. Christian has become more confident in his reading abilities and now enjoys to read. Wendy has taught Christian wonderful strategies to use when reading and decoding words. I would recommend Wendy to any child as a tutor. She has been a blessing.
