GA. Tech / Harvard Retired Prof. ACT/SAT/Dyslexia 35+ Yrs. Experience

I have more than thirty-five years of experience tutoring and teaching core academic subjects including ACT and SAT Preparation, Special Needs, including issues like Dyslexia (reading disorders), Dysgraphia (writing disorders), Dyscalculia (math disorders), and most other learning and memory processing disorders. Recent research at MIT has shown that one-on-one tut...

autism

I have been tutoring students and young adults with Autism for over thirty-five years. I have worked in conjunction with psychiatrists and other therapists to enhance the learning environment for students at several distinct levels of development. I have done post graduate work at The University of Miami and Harvard University where I have lectured on "The Challange of the Autism Spectrum, a Teaching Perspective". Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted, repetitive or stereotyped behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood. I have an infinite amount of patience, empathy, determination, and I will not quit with a trying student with caring parents!

Aspergers

I have been tutoring and teaching students with Aspergers Syndrome for over thirty-five years with good success. I love this work and have an infinite amount of patience. I retired early to devote my life to students with mild to severe learning disabilities. I have completed post graduate work at The University of Miami and Harvard University where I have lectured on "Coping Techniques for Aspergers Syndrome". Asperger also known as Asperger disorder is usally characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported. If you have any questions about my methodology or how I teach specific coping strategies, please feel free to contact me. I will not quit with a willing student and caring parents.

ADD/ADHD

I have been tutoring special needs students on a paid and volunteer basis for over thirty-five years. It is quite challenging work. I have a B.S., M.B.A., and a Juris Doctorate in Law. I feel that with my conditions, dyslexia, ADHD, and speech related issues, etc. that I am uniquely qualified to tutor coping strategies for special needs children and young adults. I currently do volunteer work with Literacy Forsyth, and I have worked with Literacy Action in Atlanta in the past. I specialize in Reading and Writing Disorders: Types of learning disabilities include: reading disability (dyslexia), mathematics disability (dyscalculia) and writing disability (dysgraphia). (I am Certified in Orton Gillingham and the Wilson Reading System, and The Interactive Reading System, multi-sensory methods). I have tutored students and adults with the following "pre-diagnosed" disorders: mild Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, mild Autism, Bipolar Disorder (manic-depression), varied Cognitive Disorders, Communication and Speech Disorders, Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Malingering, and Impulse Control Disorder (ICD). William M. from Cumming, GA

We just received our son's SAT scores and after working with G.W. his total score went up 280 points!!!!! My son improved in all three areas. This improvement increased his academic scholarship over two fold. We want to thank G.W. for all his hard work in helping our son. If you need a great tutor I would not hesitate to recommend G.W. to any family/student looking for help.

Teresa P. from Cumming, GA

My daughter began a series of sessions with G.W. 3 weeks before the SAT. She had already taken it twice, but her scores were not where she wanted them to be for the schools she was interested in. The first time she took it without any real preparation; the second time she did an online "live" class and brought her composite score up ~100 points, and after the 3 weeks with G.W.,she brought her score up another 190 points. Even as she was going through her series of sessions, my daughter sometimes questioned whether the way she was spending her time was really going to help. I approached G.W. with her feedback and he was open to our comments and was easily able to explain his methodology. We persevered and as you can see from her improvement, it definitely paid off. G.W. charges more than many of the other tutors, but he has a lot of experience. He has worked with many different kinds of learners, and he takes the time to diagnose and understand his student's weaknesses, and will prioritize the time available on those areas, so you will get results. My daughter should be competitive for the schools she is interested in. (NOTE that she did work hard at home in between tutoring sessions!) Thank you, G.W.!

Tricia A. from Cumming, GA

My student is very pleased with the help he is receiving from G.W with critical reading and writing skills. G.W is also great at keeping me informed with his progress.

Sharon J. from Alpharetta, GA

We have been really blessed to have G.W. working with our son. Our son really needed a tutor that was laid back, knowledgeable, and non-confrontational. He is very good with kids!

Paula D. from Lawrenceville, GA

Mr. G is a thoughtful/insightful tutor and is working well with our son. Always punctual, easy to reach and will work with any school/work schedule.

Angela E. from Alpharetta, GA

He arrived on time, and ready to work! He took a few minutes for review that which his teacher had provided. My son seemed to like him and was very open to him. He also took the time to communicate in advance with me about the issues I felt needed to be addressed. He will reassess after the report comes back from his professional testing.

Cerina W. from Alpharetta, GA

He is a good teacher. He explains the questions very well. Unfortunately, his teaching style does not fit my daughter's expectation.

Barbara S. from Atlanta, GA

I would not have been able to make it thru my initial return to Graduate School had it not been for Mr. G. I was not sure how I would adapt to the demanding schedule I knew was coming, but was relieved to have the guidance and patience Mr. G provided. I would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone needing the help of a Tutor. He was on time and went above and beyond what I expected.

Marla T. from Cumming, GA

G.W. was a lifesaver. With only two weeks before the SAT, he helped my son get ready. He was able to evaluate where my son needed the most help and helped him not only prepare for the test but also be better equipped for his freshman year in college. Highly recommend.

Shanda L. from Duluth, GA

He has the patience of Job (story in the Bible). When he is tutoring me, I may ask him five or six times to explain the same thing. He has never huffed and puffed and his tone of voice never changes. He explained it as many times as I needed him to with joy. He is also a very kind man. Thank you Dr. G.W. you are the best tutor that I have ever had. -Carl My son has ADHD and he was very patient with Carl. In my opinion, on a scale from 1-10, I would choose a 20 I know the 20 is not listed on the scale but he goes above and beyond what is expected of him. Thank you so much for helping my son help himself. - Shanda

Rachel J. from Alpharetta, GA

We did not have text books at first meeting, so a review was done to see where my son needs to start studies. G.W. is professional, on-time and highly qualified.

Emily S. from Suwanee, GA

He will customize teaching style and program to a student with special needs. My son is quite a challenge to motivate, and GW is able to engage and motivate him.

Therese W. from Suwanee, GA

GW taught my daughter some excellent test taking strategies. Not she knows how to look for how they try to trick you on certain questions. She feels super confident in her test taking skills now !!

Mary H. from Canton, GA

G.W. Is doing a great job tutoring my son in preparation for the ACT. We are very happy with his progress.
