John

Experienced ACT Math and Algebra Tutor & Physics

Hello! I'm John and I will be happy to serve as your or your student's one-on-one tutor. I was a Math teacher at a private high school for several years. in Peachtree City, GA. I am currently a Chemist at a medical lab near Alpharetta. I have tutored Algebra and ACT/SAT the most over the past 4 years for Wyzant, as well as other high school Math classes. My Bachelor's degree was earned with dual majors in Mathematics and Chemistry. I have been commended for exercising great patience with...

Examples of 6th grade math skills: Learning to find Least Common Multiples will provide the background needed to add and subtract any combination of fractions. For example, the LCM of 2 and 8 is found to be 8. Adding 3/4 + 1/8, we can rewrite the fraction 3/4 as (3*2)/(4*2) or 6/8. Adding 6/8 + 1/8 results in (6+1)/8 = 7/8 for the final result. Ratios and proportions are fractions that are important for the study of many sciences, as well as shopping, accounting, and even cooking. If oranges are sold at 3 oranges for $1.59, then the cost of a dozen (12) oranges is found using a ratio. 12 oranges * ($1.59 / 3 oranges) = $6.36 for a dozen oranges. Proper addition and subtraction of decimal quantities, such as dollars and cents is important for many applications. If your bank account contains $1,010.00 and then you write three checks for the amounts of $12.10, $101.12, and $211.00, the balance is found by subtracting the total of the checks from the original balance of $1,010.00. Understanding the place value of all the 0,1, and 2 digits in this problem is crucial to finding the correct balance of $1010.00 - $324.22 = $685.78.

organic chemistry

I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 15 years with Organic Chemical Compounds. My function was to do HPLC separations to test mixtures of Organic Compounds and determine their concentration. I worked doing EPA Method Analysis for both Volatile and Semivolatile Organic Compounds. I have a lot of training in working safely in the lab with dangerous Organic Compounds. I was the Safety Officer. I have tutored students for 28 years, and have tutored Chemistry and Organic Chemistry during that time. I teach students to design an Organic Chemical Synthesis by working backwards from product to starting materials, since that is much easier as working in the forward direction. I have a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude, in Chemistry from Concord UniversityI'm a retired Certified Teacher who taught Introductory and AP Chemistry (which includes some chapters about Organic Compounds) in public and private school for six years. As a graduate student at Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina, I completed coursework in four Organic Chemistry courses: Physical Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Structure Determination for Organic Compounds (using techniques: NMR, IR, and Mass Spectrometry), and Chemical Kinetics of Organic Compounds. I was also involved in research in Kinetics of potential antioxidant Organic Compounds in the lab of Dr. James Tanko. This research was important in a concerted effort of the Virginia Tech Chemistry Department to work toward a cure for cancer. One of the first chemotherapy drugs, Taxol, was first totally synthesized by Dr. David Kingston at Virginia Tech.

Wyzant Certifications: SAT Critical Reading, SAT Writing ACT- all four subjects: ACT English, ACT Reading, ACT Math, and ACT Science General tutoring in: Writing, English, Grammar, Spelling, Reading, and Proofreading SAT Writing Preparation at Huntington Learning Centers: I participate in evaluating practice writing sample SAT essays and two of us grade them independently, using the same process as the SAT to assign the essay a score on a 5 point scale. Identical to SAT's process, we will have a third Teacher review the essay if the first two reviewing Teachers' scores do not agree within one point. I am an excellent writer myself, know what SAT Writing reviewers are looking for, and would be able to help you learn to develop excellent essay writing techniques to add to the skills you already possess.

Connie S. from Mcdonough, GA

I am very grateful to have found John to tutor my son in Pre-Calculus and Algebra. Recently he said that he finally fully understands some difficult concepts for the first time ever. John goes above and beyond by preparing lessons on his own that will help my son when he comes to tutor. He is patient as well.
