ACT English

I am a National Merit Commended Student, which means that I was one of the best in the country when I took the PSAT. I of course also tutor the SAT, and made a near-perfect score on that test, so I am more than qualified to tutor this test as well.

SAT writing

I tutor the Writing SAT section by first teaching strategies for approaching its varied parts, and then teaching relevant concepts, with the assistance of practice sentences and prompts. I usually conclude with a targeted review of question types with which the student struggled during the process. This method is subject to change based on a student's needs. I had a score of 740 on this section, proving that I have ample knowledge of writing skills and testing strategies, which will help to greatly improve the scores of my students.

proofreading

I frequently assist my friend and peers with proofreading their writing. I would tutor this subject by first teaching or reviewing "GUMS" concepts and standard proofreading marks. I would then compile or write a series of passages for my student to proofread. I might even have the student proofread his/her own writing, depending on the goal of the tutoring. This method would be subject to change based on the student's needs.

SAT reading

I tutor the Critical Reading SAT section by first teaching strategies for approaching it, and then teaching relevant concepts, with the assistance of practice sentences, passages and tests. I usually conclude with a targeted review of question types with which the student struggled during the process. This method is subject to change based on a student's needs. I had a score of 780 on this section, proving that I have ample knowledge of reading skills and testing strategies, which will help to greatly improve the scores of my students.

English is one of my favorite subjects. I love to read and write, and I am something of a grammar aficionado. I took Gifted and AP English classes throughout my high school career, so I can tutor many different levels and aspects of this subject.

I am a stickler for grammar, and an avid reader. Both of these have made me an excellent writer. I can help students with many different forms of writing, from book reports to college essays to research papers.

Proper grammar is something which I practice in everyday life. I am a self-confessed "Grammar Nazi," and often enjoy pointing out or correcting grammar mistakes in signs and publications. This has caused me to be deeply familiar with proper grammar, usage, and mechanics in American English. I promise not to be obnoxious in my tutoring of this subject, so do not let my label of "Grammar Nazi" turn you away!

I have helped many students in pre-algebra before. I even help my former pre-algebra teacher with her students on some Wednesday mornings. As an advanced math student, I understand what foundations and habits need to be formed in this course so that a student can succeed in later courses.

vocabulary

I had great success with learning Greek roots, Latin roots, and vocabulary throughout grade school. I even took three years of Latin in high school. I would teach these roots for a student seeking help with vocabulary, and include memory devices for learning definitions (such as pictures or rhymes).
