One of 5 autistic spectrum disorders; a milder form autism without significant impairments in language and cognition; characterized by primary problems in social interaction. Aspergers syndrome is often thought of as "High Functioning Autism," because the person may not have speech or cognitive delays. Even though a person with Aspergers Syndrome may have difficulty socially, they may have above average intelligence. Qualifications: I was a special education teacher in the state of Hawaii from February 2001 until June 2012. Currently, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher for the Central District of Oahu. Qualifications: I have been a special education teacher in the state of Hawaii for 11 years and 9 months, working with children with autism. Currently, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher for the Central District on Oahu. I am writing my dissertation for my Ph.D. in special education with an emphasis on autism. Autism is a pervasive developmental disability characterized by extreme withdrawal, cognitive deficits, language disorders, self-stimulation, and onset before the age of 30 months. People diagnosed with autism have difficulty in three different areas: -Social interaction -Behavior -Communication -----Social Interaction ---The person with autism may lack social skills. They may not respond when a person calls them by name. They lack empathy, and are unaware of others feelings. They have poor eye contact, and prefer to play alone. -----Behavior ---This person had specific routines and rituals and if they are disturbed at any time, chaos ensues. They may perform repetitive movements, such as hand-flapping or spinning. Also, sensory reactors are magnified. They may extremely sensitive to light, noise, or touch, yet they are somewhat oblivious to pain. -----Language ---The person with autism may have delayed speech or not speak at all. They may not look a person in the eye when they are talking to them. They can't start a conversation and keep it going. May use a different tone or rhythm when they speak. They may repeat words verbatim, but not understand what they mean. They sometimes do not seem to understand simple questions or directions.
