William

Chemistry and Math Tutor

Welcome! I have taught chemistry for several years part-time at a community college while working full time as a chemist. I have experience teaching high school sciences and maths as well as college level inorganic and organic chemistry. I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of Washington, Seattle, and have been employed as a chemist and educator for over twenty years. I thoroughly enjoy teaching, and tutored all through my college years. My goal as an instructor is ...

algebra 1

algebra 2

ASVAB

I have worked as a laboratory chemist and as an instructor at Tacoma Community College for several years. I have also taught high school level sciences and mathematics. I have tutored or taught for the past thirty years. This has provided me with an extensive background of general knowledge. As an instructor, I strive to provide background information and context to my students so that they not only are able to do the work, but have an understanding of the material as well. I like to provide practice material as well so that students may review the subject by rote as necessary. I am detail oriented, and very focused on ensuring that whomever I am working with has a comprehensive, worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

I have tutored or taught for the past thirty years. This has provided me with an extensive background of general knowledge. The GED is meant to be a measure of the scope of general knowledge that a student has incorporated throughout their lives. Topics are varied, but considered essential. This provides a springboard for continued success in life, and a thorough understanding of the basics of math, English, science and the liberal arts is what I focus on for students attempting to pass the exam. As an instructor, I strive to provide background information and context to my students so that they not only are able to do the work, but have an understanding of the material as well. We have been so impressed with Bill (William) and his extraordinary teaching skills. Our son has been eager to learn/study since being tutored by Bill and it has actually spilled over to other subjects. Thank you for being willing and capable of taking Michael from where he was educationally and changing his perception of school and studying. Cannot thank you enough for making him believe that he probably will be able to transition from home schooling to college.

Bill is a thoughtful and calm professional who has been very insightful in trying to understand where the difficulties lie in my child's challenges in math, and in the learning process. As an educator, his perspective has been invaluable. He has made good suggestions as to different approaches and options that might help break through the wall of frustration and fear. While there is still much to learn, my student has a sense that it is possible to make progress. Bill's patience and consistency are helping my student improve every week, building confidence. His ongoing feedback is very helpful in understanding and reinforcing the lesson and working on student responsibilities and accountability. Bill has also provided tools outside of the regular text to reinforce and practice hard to grasp concepts. With Bill's help, our student has gone from a sense of total failure and frustration to now setting goals for progress and success. As the school year winds to a close, my student has been very open in attributing successful completion of pre-calculus to the explanations, guidance, and support received from Bill, who even in the most frustrating moments, was able to keep my student moving in a forward direction. He never allowed my student to give up and was very accommodating when additional sessions were requested to prepare for tests. He identified and addressed weaknesses in concepts that hadn't been learned or understood in earlier math classes, that contributed to the initial difficulties, and has worked hard to provide a foundation to enable my student to be better prepared for the future, and more challenging courses ahead. Bill's ability to explain, his persistence and his patience are his greatest strengths and we are very appreciative. As a tutor, he is top-notch.

William provides wonderful feedback after every session with my son. I was impressed from his very first review--he really hit the nail on the head with my son's strengths and challenges. It is nice to have him hear the same advice on preparation, goal setting etc. from someone other than Mom.

Bill worked with our son for several months, beginning with Chemistry last fall. He was always professional and very consistent with our son. There's no question that Bill does a great job teaching the material, but what I really appreciated was how he adjusted what they would work on based on our son's needs. At some point that meant alternating between math and chemistry, adding extra sessions occasionally, and toward the end of the year, working on SAT studying. He quickly understood our son's personality and worked to challenge and encourage him in all of his study habits. My son valued their time together and I never had to remind him of their appointments. I highly recommend him to anyone needing tutoring in math and Chemistry.

I am so fortunate that I had Bill as my tutor. It is only with his help that I made it through my pre calculus class maintaining a decent grade average as well as my sanity. He is so patient, which is imperative when trying to make someone understand things that are completely out of their comfort zone. If I didn't understand his explanation for a problem/concept, then he'd try it from different angles until I did. His demeanor and approach helped me to relax and not view every aspect of pre calculus as terrifying, and once I was able to do that, it in turn increased my confidence. As this was the last class standing between me and my degree and I was not at all confident I was going to be able to pass it when I first started, "thank you" does not seem adequate, but since that's all I can do... THANK YOU!!!!

I was very pleased with my tutoring session with William. He was extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter. He was courteous, and worked problems with me in a way that was beneficial to my learning style. I felt that it was time well spent. I hope to keep the once a week tutoring sessions through March. Thanks!

Our daughter came out of the first lesson and said, "I learned more in one hour than I have in a semester." It was wonderful to have such help and encouragement. She is confident now that with the help of William A. she will understand the concepts in Algebra II. Thank you.

Where do I begin. He truly made chemistry interesting and more approachable for me. I have been with him for the last year or so and have gained so much knowledge about the course material from him. His patience and always smiling face made the tutoring sessions more enjoyable. He is a very kind person, always punctual, understanding, prompt about scheduling, encouraging, always lending a helpful hand, and truly understands the student. He knew where I lacked and would always do example questions and clarify the concepts. He mends his teaching style according to the student and guarantee the student will walk into the class with more confidence. It was a pleasure learning from him. He is a gem of a person and a teacher. Thank you!

We needed an SAT chemistry and Math tutor. Bill fit the requirements. He gave my student the tools needed to solve SAT math word problems. He reviewed chemistry concepts & built up her confidence in the subject matter. Bill was patient, encouraging, communicates well, punctual to lessons and responding to emails, but most importantly, he understands what students need to be confident in the subject matter.

Lisa S. from Tacoma, WA

William was extremely professional and helpful during the arrangement of our first tutoring session. He is safety conscious and is great with communicating. My daughter enjoyed the session and is looking forward to the next. Thank you Bill!

Kim B. from Gig Harbor, WA

Bill was responsive to scheduling an appointment. He is mature and patient. It is very apparent he has taught previously and has skills in education. He was able to assess my son's needs and determine where to begin. I would gladly recommend him.

Jill R. from Tacoma, WA

Nicole was very relieved, and wished you were there during the school year to help. She said in the short time you spent with her, she felt as though she learned a lot and felt you were calm and able to really understand the material. I would like to set up more sessions for her on a consistent basis throughout summer.

Karen M. from Tacoma, WA

He connects well with my daughter and is able to focus on exactly what she needs for help. We've used other tutors and Bill (William) has been the best.

Srini S. from Tacoma, WA

We will continue to use his help through high school. He is patient and knowledgeable. My son's scores have also improved over the last 3 months.

Mauricio R. from Tacoma, WA

William was a good fit for my son. Ramon seemed more confident and happy after the session with William. I was amazed to find them hard at work when I came to pick my son up. Grateful for a great experience. Thank you.

Ryan M. from Tacoma, WA

My approach to a rigorous skeptical analysis to what will one day be viewed as most influential scientific discovery of this decade has been guided to incur less turbulence.

Caleb K. from Puyallup, WA

William tutored me in the subject of organic chemistry. William has a personality that is very easy to feel comfortable with. He loves chemistry and it shows. You could say he is chemistry-philic. He made the subject matter very lucid with examples and demonstrations that were easily understood. I already have a bachelor's degree in nursing. I have taken numerous science courses. Organic chemistry has proven to be very difficult, but William explains it in a way that makes it seem like a walk in the park.

Alex D. from Tacoma, WA

Mr. William and I have been meeting up these last few weekends and I can say that I definitely feel a lot more confident with organic chemistry. I have also had Mr. William in the past for inorganic chemistry and has saved me from having to retake the class. William is patient and highly effective in his teaching methods, I will be recommending him to anyone who needs help with chemistry in the future.
