I'm a life-long learner. Check out my profile picture; I'm having lunch in a traditional family hutong home in Beijing, China! Take hold of every opportunity you're given to learn; the more you learn, the more you'll want to know! I've been an educator for years. I've taught AD, BSN, Master, and PhD nursing students (campus, clinical, online), MBA students (online), Bible college students (writing, computer usage, & science mostly), pre-school through high school home school students in co...

Macintosh
As a Mac user myself for the past seven years, I have a general working knowledge of both MacAir and MacBook Pro, as well as the following specific applications: Keynote, Pages, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Safari, iTunes, Maps, iPhoto, iPad, iPhone, and the Mac App Store plus some limited experience using iMovie, iBooks, and GarageBand. I use the MicroSoft Office Suite on my Mac and have a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I use Keynote & PowerPoint regularly to give presentations. I can help new users get started, answer general questions, or help learn the basics of using these specific applications.
study skills
piano
I still own the piano I practiced on when I began lessons at six years of age! I took lessons through high school and taught lessons in my home for over ten years. I teach beginning to intermediate piano lessons allowing the students to lead me at their natural learning pace. I use an eclectic mix of method books from several of the standard piano literature for children, including Alfred, Bastien, and Faber and Faber, depending on the child’s strengths and personality. Games, hands-on activities, sing along, mini-recitals for family, duets, music reflecting the child’s interests, listening to the classic assignments, and various other motivational techniques make lessons & practice time relaxed & fun.
phonics
As a lead teacher in a learning coop for seven years, I’ve helped teach elementary school children to read using phonics as well as taught my own children to be good readers using a comprehensive phonics program. I also have training in child development, learning disabilities, and development problems. Using a good phonics curriculum that fits the student's personality, we’ll work through short then long vowels, learning vowel & consonant digraphs, blends, patterns, and more. These are the basic tools for decoding and are especially helpful for students having difficulty reading. “To learn to read is to light a fire†— Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

I have both an undergraduate and a master’s degree that required a number of language arts, science, and math courses. I have training in child development, learning disabilities, and developmental problems. I tutored online classes in English grammar and writing for over 10 years. Over seven years, I taught children of various ages as a lead teacher in a successful large learning coop, teaching K-12 classes including reading, vocabulary, spelling, writing, public speaking, drama, geography, social studies, history, basic sciences, and math (elementary through algebra) using an integrated, 'delight directed' approach. When tutoring young children either individually or in small groups, I use this same approach because it keeps learning ‘real’ & fun by building on the student’s natural interests and aptitudes to facilitate learning those all-important basic skills.

Shara is an outstanding tutor, I couldn't have asked for a better tutor. I had her for only one session to help me with my essay to get into Law School and just that one session she gave me so much valuable feedback and helped enhance my essay. At the end of the session she even offered to help me through my final drafts; she truly cares about helping you through it all. I would recommend her to anyone that needs a tutor especially in writing.
