ADD/ADHD
I worked as a special needs teacher assistant with kids diagnosed with ADD/ADHD for 4 1/2 years. My duties entailed assisting the teacher with instructions in carpentry, math and independently living. My way of tutoring is making sure the individual understands the subject at hand in a one-on-one setting. I know that someone with ADD/ADHD (adult or child) has a real problem paying attention and/or being still. I work patiently with them enabling them to grasp the lesson.
autism
I worked as a teacher assistant at a special needs school for 4 1/2 years. I worked with students diagnosed with autism. Also, during teacher workshop at the beginning of the school year we would have a briefing on autism. My duties included assisting the teacher in instructing carpentry, math and independent living. As a tutor I know some students require hand to hand assistance and I don't mind working hand to hand. I will work patiently with people with autism and not to make them think they are being pressured. I will work at their pace to ensure they understand the subject. As far as their social skills are concerned, I will work with them using tools to help them interact with others.
