Professional Reading Tutor --Building a Lasting Foundation

I able able to help children with beginning manuscript/printing and cursive writing for older children. I use Handwriting Without Tears materials which are structured and child friendly. In addition, I am able to help your older child learn how to write/compose on the sentence, paragraph and essay level. My background includes teaching Writing Process in both public and private school settings to older students. I also have completed coursework in Project Read's Writing Strand.

SAT reading
My background in Reading covers a number of different areas. I am a certified Reading Specialist and a former HS English Teacher. I am further trained in Reading Comprehension and Fluency Instruction. SAT Reading skills require both content and strategy instruction. In many instances, students can improve their overall performance on this section of the test by knowing and applying some simple, yet important strategies. "You don't know what you don't know," but once students do know, then their approach can become more skillful and efficient. My goal as a tutor is to provide students with the information and practice they need in order to become better test takers of the Reading portion of the SAT.
SAT writing
I am able to help your student learn how to write/compose on the sentence, paragraph and essay level in preparation for the SAT essay. This will involve analyzing sample essays to note how the ones graded with full credit are developed and organized. It will also involve practicing stating a thesis and position on a given topic through development of supporting details. This will be done without a time pressure at first and then in a timed practice. Since the SAT also tests for knowledge of grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, these areas will also be practiced through SAT prep exercises. My own background includes teaching Writing Process to older students in both public and private school settings as well as in one-to-one tutoring. Some of my own writing has been published in literary magazines.
SSAT
I have over ten years' experience in helping High School students prepare for the SAT and the PSAT. I am also a former high school English teacher and am a certified Reading Specialist. My entire professional career as well as my avocation as poet and writer have given me a deep knowledge and versatility in language. The nuts and bolts of skill, syntax and grammar as well as the nuances of reading and writing styles allow me to approach students in a way that helps them understand more easily. My facility lends itself to their ease and comfort in asking questions and in understanding more their own strengths and weaknesses. From there instruction flows more naturally.
