Certified Teacher and Engineer - Tutoring Physics, Maths, and Sciences
I am a retired Massachusetts credentialed teacher and electrical engineer tutoring maths and sciences. I have a Massachusetts teaching certificate; 9 years experience tutoring maths and sciences, 10 years teaching high school physics, astronomy, and chemistry; 22 years designing computer hardware and networking equipment; and 10 years as a construction electrician. Teaching is my 3rd career. After two other careers and 30 years prior work experience, I came to teaching as an avocation as w...
computer engineering
A computer engineering major is always studied in a school of engineering and is the study and application of engineering to the design, development, and maintenance of computer hardware and software. Computer Engineering is how to design systems that include both computer hardware and software from an engineering aspect and is a different discipline from Computer Science. It is designing a computer with electrical and software engineers from a small cell phone to a large computing system for an international company and includes designing the hardware, firmware, operating systems, networks, and communications between computers. Computer Engineering also includes the core coursework of an engineering degree including higher mathematics, physics, science and engineering courses. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hartford (W. Hartford Conn.). During my studies I concentrated much of my course work in computers. I have taken graduate coursework in computer engineering at Northeastern University. I spent 20 years in the computer industry designing computer and networking hardware for Prime Computer, Digital Computer, and Bytex.(The 1st two were manufacturers of mini-computers and Bytex was a manufacturer of networking hardware.)

computer science
Computer Science is how to make a computer do something so writing software to program a computer is an essential part of Computer Science. Computer Science as a discipline does not concentrate on the engineering core but on software and algorithms and so is different from Computer and Software Engineering. A computer science major can be studied in the engineering, mathematics, or other department of a college. Computer scientists are interested in making a computer designed by others operate to achieve a goal. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hartford (W. Hartford Conn.). During my studies I concentrated much of my course work in computers. I have taken graduate coursework in computer engineering at Northeastern University. I spent 20 years in the computer industry designing computer and networking hardware for Prime Computer, Digital Computer, and Bytex. ADD/ADHD
I am patient with my students and able to provide support for them when they are having attention difficulties. I have organizational techniques I used for students in my classroom and I can provide students with those and other ways to take notes and organize their notebooks. While I do not tutor students specifically for their needs in overcoming ADD or ADHD issues, I am well qualified to teach my subjects of the math and science to students with ADD and ADHD and to make appropriate adjustments to help them. When tutoring an ADD/ADHD student I suggest keeping lessons to a time they can remained focused for. I try to be more cognizant of changing the lesson to do different activities such as reading, answering questions, takeing notes. If the student's mind wanders to another topic I do not mind having a short chat about something of interest or letting them sit on an aerobics ball. Getting the wanderlust out of their system will make the rest of the session more productive. As part of my Masters of Arts in Teaching, teaching ADD/ADHD and other special needs students in the classroom was a topic in many of my courses. I also completed a course in the special education department on teaching math and science to special needs students including ADD and ADHD. In addition I have had tutored and had many ADD and ADHD and other special needs students in my classroom.
discrete math
Discreet mathematics is the study of things that can only exist is defined states or at defined times. It is similar to the difference between integers (discreet) and all real numbers (continuous) with integers being only certain numbers and real numbers also including everything in between. Discreet maths are at the core of computer engineering where computers only have ones and zeros. Discreet maths are also basic in communication and communication. It is a basis for the new digital TV signals we have compared to the old analogue signals. I have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and a Master of Arts (MAT) in Teaching. During my studies in Electrical Engineer and Physics I studied mathematics extensively from Algebra through Calculus, Engineering Calculus, Differential Equations, and many other advanced mathematics including Discreet Mathematics. I have studied Discreet Mathematics in my curriculum for my BSEE, in my graduate work, and especially in my studies of computer hardware design. I used discreet maths in my work for 20 years designing computer hardware.
special needs
I am not a special education teacher but as part of my Masters of Arts in Teaching, teaching special education students in the classroom was a topic in many of my classes. Also I completed a course from the special education department in teaching math and science to special needs students. I have had special needs students in my classroom including: a number of ADD/ADHD students; multiple Aspergers and dyslexic students, others who had just moved to US and spoke no English (one Japanese, one Vietnamese, and one Ukrainian) and other special needs including quadriplegic, test anxiety, and executive function. I have also tutored special needs students, some with WyzAnt, mostly including ADD/ADHD and one with profound dyslexia. I do not tutor students specifically for or in their special need. But I am well qualified to teach my subjects in the math and sciences to special needs students and make appropriate adjustments to help them.

If my son needs help next year with physics or calculus, I am definitely going to contact him. He helped my son with trig.

Our first meeting was a great success. It is clear that Bob A. is a dedicated and caring tutor. His review and outline of our daughter's goals were spot on. He is patient and thoughtful. I appreciate the extra time he takes to provide more feed back and information during the week between sessions. I anticipate that our daughter's confidence and skill with pre-calculus will improve significantly under his guidance.
Lindesy Q. from Walpole, MA
Bob worked with my 9th grade daughter for a few sessions before her final exam in Physics. She had been struggling with several concepts that she could not grasp and Bob was able break down the topics so she easily understood the material. Bob not only knows Physics but more importantly, he knows how to effectively teach Physics. I highly recommend Bob as a tutor!
Michelle S. from Norfolk, MA
Bob's knowledge of math and science is extensive and impressive. He is quickly able to provide support and guidance in an extremely patient manner. A true delight!
Chung O. from Sharon, MA
Bob is easy to work with and has made Physics enjoyable. He is an amazing tutor who helps you a lot and makes the subject understandable. He is very patient and flexible, and his tutoring updates are very detailed. I highly recommend Bob as a tutor!
Susan M. from Framingham, MA
Bob has worked with my sixteen year old son at our house for the last four months. He has shown patience and dedication. He is always prompt, and has even stayed a little later without charging. We definitely recommend him!
