Creative, Dynamic Tutor with Wide Experience

I bring to tutoring proven experience (see below), boundless enthusiasm, and an absolute refusal to be bored or boring. I am endlessly creative, and will find a way to make the material understandable to and interesting for you (and me), whether it means designing grammar lessons from Harry Potter or Falling Skies, or comparing Legos and Lincoln Logs to illustrate the differences in Latin conjugations. Don't confuse that with lack of challenge however! My students typically tell me, "This is ...

ESL/ESOL

I've worked with speakers of a variety of European, mid-Eastern and Asian languages. I spent almost four years with Berlitz, working with both individuals and small groups. In addition I've taught two semesters in a college ESL program and have done work with a small language academy. I've also done individual tutoring.

I have taught both 4th and 6th grades (all subjects) in a classroom setting. I have taught 6th grade Latin in a home school academy (small class instruction two days a week with me and homework provided for rest of week). I have taught a once-a-week Latin enrichment program for 4th-6th grade home schoolers. And I have done individual tutoring of 4th-6th graders in English, reading and math. You will see from my profile that I have done an equal amount of high school and adult tutoring/teaching, but I have a clear understanding of and expertise with gearing tutoring sessions to younger students.

phonics

As you are doubtless aware (since you're seeking a phonics teacher), phonics is not taught to children for its value in itself, but is an approach to teaching reading. It's the method by which I learned to read and I have found it an indispensable strategy both in developmental and remedial reading, which I have taught in the classroom and tutored individually to Grades 4, 6, 8 and high school. Students have a much larger "listening vocabulary" than a "reading vocabulary," and frequently once they can sound out a previously mysterious word their reaction is, "Oh, I know what that means." I have also used phonics in teaching English as a second language to grades 9 through adult. I am thoroughly familiar with several phonics programs, including some online which students can use for reinforcing skills.

Graham O. from Towson, MD

Elizabeth had a great first session with my son - he felt that she understood where he has been having some difficulty with his Latin and that she was able to give him some valuable tips. We were very pleased.

Lakia B. from Windsor Mill, MD

Elizabeth was on time, prepared, and ready to tutor the moment she arrived. I also liked the fact that she was kind and very pleasant to work with. She paid attention to my son's needs and was very patient with him. This made it easy for him to get comfortable quickly with her. My son is looking forward to his lessons. Great tutor!
