I've been a tutor and teaching assistant at the University level now for 8 months in the subject of philosophy. The method that's worked for me is to allow the students to ask any particular questions they have on the subject, and then for us to move onto the prescribed coursework. Due to the formal academic setting, sometimes students are not entirely forthcoming about a problem they might be having; I like to think that my casual style allows this edge to be broken....
