I recently retired from teaching Language Arts at Colonel White/Thurgood Marshall High School, after 15 years of success with many levels of students and courses from general LA to AP Language and Composition. I truly enjoy providing an open environment where students can honestly show their anxieties around reading and writing. As they gain confidence with skills, they can approach the next course with some strategies (and maybe a sense of humor) that will definitely improve their school day!

The GRE writing measures are extremely specific, and the process demands that you understand the writing prompts well. They are more about the skill of making an argument, although you will also be asked to make an argument itself. I love this kind of writing, and through teaching Advanced Placement Language and Composition to seniors over the past several years, I am well qualified to help you gain these skills and confidence. I have also taught Technical Writing, and am able to help you clarify your talking points logically and cohesively. The textbook I used for AP is entitled "Everything's an Argument," and this philosophy will help you recognize the key points of an argument, and the key strategies to organize one. In teaching debate over the years, I also have a sense of structuring the case for a position, or isolating the disadvantages of the status quo. If you truly believe that you need help in the writing portions of the GRE, I would be happy and qualified to work with you.

My undergraduate degree and state teacher's license qualify me to teach in a variety of Communications areas. I have taught Theatre, Public Speaking, and Debate, in addition to English and Journalism, throughout my career. Most specifically, I taught theatre history and performance at the Interlochen Arts Academy; I directed more than 20 shows and programs in both high schools and middle schools, and coached many seasons of debate and forensics. I also was an Adjunct professor for the required undergraduate Public Speaking course at Miami University. In the last few years I have directed theatre productions at the Dayton Regional STEM School and for the Yellow Springs High School/Mills Lawn Middle School. I earned my Masters in Theatre Administration from University of Michigan, and worked as a Theatre manager in professional (Equity) summer stock for many years.

My son had taken the ACT twice with the same results on both attempts. He was strong in math and science but needed help with English and Reading. Phyllis was able to build his confidence and teach him the techniques to significantly improve his scores in these areas. This will allow him to enter his department starting in the fall. The University of Cincinnati, Ohio University and University of Toledo all required at least a 23 on the ACT for entry into their engineering departments. She is also very reasonably priced compared to other places I saw on the internet. You live and learn... I have two older sons that I would have sent her way if I would have known how easy it was and what kind of impact she could make.

From student: Ms. Phyllis helped me prepare for the ACT, two weeks before each test. In this time period, my understanding of English and Reading concepts improved greatly. Through ACT materials given by Ms. Phyllis and ACT materials I already had, Ms. Phyllis guided me through all aspects of the English and Reading sections of the test. Ms. Phyllis' effort resulted in an increase of 4 points in the Reading section and an increase of 9 points in the English section. I was very happy!
