Jessie

Energetic math tutor for all ages!

I have a teaching license in elementary education and middle school math. I currently work as a middle school and high school math interventionist at a charter school in St. Paul, MN. I have been teaching over ten years and have tutored over a hundred students. I was a substitute teacher for several years in multiple school districts, taught for an online elementary school, wrote a math curriculum for a Canadian Company, taught summer school, and worked as a special education paraprofession...

Praxis

I have taken the Praxis exams and have scored very high on them. The math praxis I was given the presidential scholar recognition for being in the top 3% of all test takers. The math portion of the praxis test is similar to the ACT and SAT exams and I passed both of those qualification tests by a lot!

autism

I have a special place in my heart for students dealing with Autism. I have worked for several years with these students to accomplish learning goals, improve their social skills, and to communicate to parents what they need at home. These students are the most fascinating to me because they think about things so differently than "normal" that it gives great perspective to how communication really does affect understanding. Being able to work through situations with students (and never giving up up on them) is something I find very important and I am very willing to do so!

Aspergers

I spent a summer working one-on-one with a little boy who had Aspergers. He greatly struggled with handling new situations, and I was there to encourage him to give it a try and help him accomplish his goals. By the end of the summer, his mother was in tears because her little boy was willing to walk across the beach sand and put his feet in the water. When I had started working with him, he wouldn't even touch the sand with shoes on.

ADD/ADHD

I worked as a special education paraprofessional for two years at an elementary school. I spent my days working with special needs students that had trouble focusing due to their ADD. I learned several techniques to use in trainings, as well as working with their classroom teachers. The students just need someone with patience, and also someone who can help them work through their hardships.

Jessie is flexible when we need to change times, friendly w/humans and dog alike, fantastic w/our 7th grade daughter. She gets the girl and gets the math & we couldn't be more pleased.

My son was very happy with his first lesson. He was a little unsure about having a tutor, but he was smiling ear to ear after his lesson and said he thought Jessie was super nice. Looking forward to having her do more sessions throughout the summer.

Jessie is great! My daughter really looks froward to her coming each week! She is always on time. She is very good at teaching math.

Kate G. from Minneapolis, MN

Jessie has been tutoring my 9th grade son for the last half of the semester and we have seen great progress in his math skills. She has connected well with my son and he looks forward to working with her.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Jessie B. My daughter's math grade was brought from D's and F's to A's and B's working with Jessie just once a week for the school year. Jessie is organized, always on time, and easy to talk to. She helped my daughter feel comfortable, confident, and capable in her math learning. From our first phone conversation to our last session, Jessie was professional yet compassionate and was able to relate to my 14 year old which we all know is great skill to have. Thank you Jessie, my daughter's self confidence in math has skyrocketed because of you. She is no longer the girl who struggles, she is now the girl who eagerly participates.

Jessie has a positive attitude and made a great first impression on us. I especially like the way she had a binder with my kid's name printed on it ready for our first lesson.

Jessie did a great job of listening to my concerns as a parent and applying what information I had given her to her work with my son. She was able to interact well with him and get him to listen and participate; something I hadn't been able to do myself. She took the time to understand his math abilities, strengths and weaknesses. She was prompt and great with follow up. I would highly recommend Jessie as a math tutor for anyone struggling at the middle school/high school level.

Jon & Allison B. from Minneapolis, MN

Our son is a VERBAL learner and struggles with abstract concepts. Math is his most challenging subject. From their first meeting, Jessie has worked very hard to earn his trust and understand what interests him. She has a gentle and cheerful personality. She has been very responsive to working on the areas we suggest as well as those she has assessed. Jessie even attended a meeting with his teachers at school to make sure her efforts were coordinated with his "team" of teachers and to better understand his learning style. Jessie seems to strike a good balance of making him feel good about what he is learning simply from encouragement and offering occasional rewards like M&Ms (with our permission of course. Chocolate is a big deal around here!). Jessie is always on time, flexible when there is a conflict, and patient and persistent when he is having trouble focusing. We appreciate her contribution to his growth. The biggest compliment I can give is that our son doesn't complain on the days when she comes for tutoring! Jessie has been successful at making his most challenging subject FUN instead of a CHORE, which is really every parent's goal in helping their child learn. I have no complaints and really can't say enough good about her. Thanks Jessie!

Jessie was very patient with my daughter as they went through her math homework. Jessie explained the concepts in a way that She could understand.
