Yumi

Experienced Japanese Teacher

Do you like anime? Do you love Jpop? Do you practice Japanese martial arts? Do you want to have fun learning Japanese? Hajimemashite. Let me introduce myself. I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. I taught myself English. I went to Sophia University in Tokyo for two years and then I was selected to represent Sophia at its sister school University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Instead of spending one year there as originally planned, I studied there for three years to graduate cum laude...

Yumi made the cutest binder for my daughter to keep her learning materials. My daughter loves going to learn from Yumi and always is so happy when she comes home from her session. I highly recommend Yumi as a Japanese tutor for you or your child.

She's a fantastic teacher. You really will find yourself speaking Japanese 90% of the time. She has many learning materials (props, cards, etc) on hand. You can tell she's put a lot of effort into providing the best learning experience for her students. I look forward to each lesson!

My daughter looks forward to lessons and is learning. Yumi makes learning fun and really works hard to "drill" the knowledge.

Yumi was my Japanese tutor before I left for Japan. Before I met her I had taken some Japanese in university, but if I had not taken lessons from her I know I would have placed much lower on my exams and I would have been uncomfortable talking in Japanese when I arrived in Japan. However, after tutoring for a few months I was much more capable and confident. I was able to join a club that was all Japanese students and place into a higher level Japanese course in the program I was in. She has lessons prepared for all of her students and can start from any level of Japanese knowledge. She's fun to talk to and an interesting person. I highly recommend her.

Yumi matched the pace I needed. In areas where I was ready to move faster, she moved faster, and kept me challenged and progressing at my optimum pace. Whenever I struggled, she matched my pace, giving me extra time to catch up, so that I always understood the material before moving on to a new concept. Because she maximizes the use of the lesson time, she is an excellent value for every hour spent with her. She uses multiple teaching methods within a single lesson, for variety, which kept me concentrating and focused longer than usual. I loved the way she custom-tailored the lessons to meet some very specific needs that I have. She is a master teacher.

Having taught herself English, Yumi has a very good understanding of how students learn languages. She leverages that experience to structure lessons and provide students with tools to learn Japanese. Yumi supplements the textbook "Japanese for Busy People" with her very own worksheets and provides exercises and media such as movies and newspapers to take home and use as a study aid between lessons. During a typical lesson Yumi introduces new material from the text or from her own supplemental worksheets and will review material from previous lessons using her very own flashcards. Review is cumulative in order to help the student maintain his or her vocabulary. She is willing to work around the student's schedule and even reschedule lessons on short notice. I've had a very positive experience working with Yumi and would happily recommend her to any student desiring to learn Japanese.

She taught me how to ask for stuff politely, introduce people, and we learned counting. She also taught me how to say "what is your name?" I liked how quickly we really started learning things. I was very comfortable around her. I'm excited that we're already speaking the language and she answered my questions about things I didn't understand. She's a great teacher!
