In high-school, I struggled significantly in mathematics. I finally sought out a tutor (begrudgingly, admittedly), and thanks to them, I graduated as the valedictorian of my class. Ironically, 12 years later, I have an MSPH in epidemiology and biostatistics (basically disease math), and am a PhD candidate.
