Alan

Talented Special Ed Teacher Utilizing a Proven Program

I am a Special Educator who has used a variety of approaches to help students acquire academic skills, and develop habits of mind in inclusion and self-contained classrooms over the past 8 years. I was fortunate enough to hear about and purchase the Barton Reading Program, an Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to develop reading and spelling skills for students with dyslexia or other learning challenges. The Barton Program starts with developing strong phonemic awareness skills which are the building blocks of a reading foundation and progresses through the skills that help students “break the code.” You are welcome to check out the Barton Reading Program at www.bartonreading.com . Please note, the Barton Program’s philosophy is slow down to speed up. The Program helps students develop a strong foundation in phonemic awareness skills (blending, segmenting, substituting, and omitting sounds, rhyming) and progresses logically through foundational skills before moving on to the higher skills. To reap the benefits from this program, the student has to be willing to start at a place where he/she may feel she has already mastered but may still have uneven skills in these areas. The program will be followed with fidelity but will progress at a speed dictated by how fast or slow students acquire the foundational skills.
