Ivy League Grad with 25+ years in teaching and administration

A student's confidence is key to success and is nurtured by working with a compassionate, qualified teacher like myself. I hold New Jersey certification for English, grades 1-12, certification for Elementary Education, a degree in English literature, and many graduate-level reading and language courses, which, along with my many years of teaching and administration, have made me an extremely effective tutor. I have had students whom I began tutoring in fourth grade who still keep in touch w...

Praxis

Passing the Praxis can feel like a daunting task. I know, because I just took it myself recently. I passed with a score of 193 out of a possible score of 200. This high score earned me a Recognition of Excellence from ETS. I would be happy to help others achieve their goal!

SAT writing

I have New Jersey certification as an English teacher and have spent more than two decades teaching language skills as both a classroom teacher and a personal tutor preparing students for the writing, reading, and grammar sections of the SAT. Three components are necessary to write a successful SAT essay: the student must have a good vocabulary, and present his/her ideas in a written form that shows an understanding of the elements of an essay and the order that these elements must be presented. The student must also have detailed knowledge of literature, history, and current events to use to defend the thesis. There is a limited amount of time to formulate and write a coherent essay. A student needs to be prepared with knowledge that can be applied to this essay quite quickly. I can show a student how to prepare for this challenge so that he/she will feel confident.

SAT reading

Taking the SAT Reading test not only requires good comprehension, but an effective strategy for taking the test. Knowing how to take the test is almost as important as having good reading skills. Because I am a NJ certified English teacher, I can work on both reading skills and test taking skills. I can pinpoint specific reading skills that might need improvement, and work on those while practicing how to take the test. I have many years of tutoring experience in both reading and SAT test-taking. Many students assume that "reading" will also include working on essay writing, grammar needed for sentence completions, and vocabulary. I also tutor for these sections of the test. This can be a very stressful time for a student. He or she can approach the test with greater confidence, good strategies, and the ability to attain a higher score with my guidance.

Mrs. H knows exactly what it takes to prepare a student for the SAT. She teaches the student how to take the test as opposed to just learning the subject. In addition, as a result of the lessons, my daughter was able to apply what she learned to prepare for the essay and apply that to her work at school. On a particular essay she wrote, her teacher, along with the rest of the administration, chose her essay out of over 600 essays to be the example of what students should be able to achieve.

I am very pleased with Virginia H who has been tutoring my 7th grader for the past nine months. Virginia is a wonderful teacher. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Virginia is goal oriented and brings a comprehensive approach to tutoring. She tutors my daughter in above grade level materials and is preparing her for taking the SAT in a few months. She uses a variety of methods to teach basic concepts in vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. She also constantly encourages the student to explore beyond their comfort zone to build new strengths. I am very pleased with the results I see in my daughter. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Virginia also plays the role of a coach in improving my daughter's motivation for learning and her self-confidence. She is a great tutor and I strongly recommend her.

Mrs. H is our 4th grade son's first tutor. In her first lesson, she is very patient talking to him about his school, likes and dislikes etc, so they are building a warm chemistry from beginning. She prepares her lessons well and follows her agenda during the lesson. Our son enjoys the tutoring very much.
