Expert tutor with PhD will bring out the best in you!
My teaching philosophy: Everyone has unique strengths and talents. Unfortunately, academic challenges can overshadow these positives, leaving you and your child feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Rather than merely tackling weaknesses, tutoring begins with the places where students are already shining. This philosophy is grounded in the cognitive science notion of bootstrapping. Simply put, humans have the extraordinary ability to use the mental resources we already have to scaffold places wher...

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology. I completed a postdoctoral position in education. I have experience tutoring students with ADHD. With these students, I use my expertise in how people organize information and learn. In particular, I work on organizational and study skills, which students can transfer across multiple subject areas.

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology. Additionally I completed a postdoctoral position in education. I also trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction which is appropriate for children with learning disabilities. During my doctoral work, I conducted a study on cognitive development in children on the autism spectrum. For this project, I worked with 45 children on the spectrum and evaluated their development in language, categorization, executive function, metamemory, perception, and other areas of cognitive development. I have presented my findings from this work at several national conferences. Working with children on the spectrum has given me a deep understanding of the particular challenges they face and of ways to help them achieve their goals.

Nora has been working with our son and is helping him learn quickly. She listened to our concerns and goals and has shown up (on time!) prepared with worksheets that were appropriate for him. Beyond the basics, which she does very well, she never seems to get flustered! Our son can be a bit cranky and needs a lot of re-focusing. Nora can totally go with the flow and keep him on task at the same time. The combo of great teacher and great with teens has made for great tutoring sessions.
